Viewfinder lets players turn Polaroid photos into real 3D geometry (2023)
Sad Owl's debut puzzler gives players an instant camera: photos materialize as 3D geometry, so placing a 2D picture reshapes the world.

What it had to solve
Matt Stark prototyped perspective illusions in his second year of university and posted them on Twitter; the reactions convinced him to drop out and build a full game around converting 2D images into 3D parts of the world.
How it works
Viewfinder is a puzzle game from Scottish studio Sad Owl Studios in which an instant camera lets players turn photographs into real 3D geometry. A photo held up and placed in the world materializes as physical space — a snapshot of a desk becomes a walkway, a photo of the sky becomes a wall that disappears.
The idea came from director Matt Stark's university experiments with perspective-based illusions. Once his prototypes drew attention on Twitter, he dropped out to build a full game around what he called the 'Polaroid effect': seeing the photo come out of a recognizable physical object emphasized its flatness, making the moment it became 'real' all the more surprising.
The hard part was technical: taking and placing photos modifies a lot of meshes within a single frame, risking a noticeable stutter. The team kept environments low-poly early on, then optimized the mesh-slicing code; a Steam demo a few months before launch identified hardware-specific problems and built buzz without spoiling the puzzles.
Viewfinder launched on July 18, 2023 for PC and PlayStation 5, published by Thunderful. Critics met it warmly — Rock Paper Shotgun called it one of the best puzzle games of 2023 — and the game received two nominations at The Game Awards 2023.
Why it lands
- A recognizable object — the instant camera — made a surreal mechanic feel physical and intuitive, so the 'photo becomes real' moment landed.
- Stark let audience engagement steer the direction: the illusions people responded to became the core, not a side gimmick.
- One strong interaction carried the whole product; every puzzle evolved from it instead of bolting on unrelated mechanics.
- Launch hygiene — playtest observation and a demo before release — protected a game whose appeal depends entirely on surprise.
What it did
Warmly received at launch: Rock Paper Shotgun called it 'one of the best puzzle games of 2023', and it earned two nominations at The Game Awards 2023, putting the debut studio on a global stage.
What you can take
A single magical interaction can carry a product: Stark bet everything on one mechanic — making a flat photo become real — and built the whole game around that surprise.
Since then
After launch Viewfinder became Sad Owl Studios' debut and calling card, published by Thunderful on PC and PlayStation 5. Reviews like Rock Paper Shotgun's 'one of the best puzzle games of 2023' and two Game Awards 2023 nominations gave a young studio global visibility, and the mechanic kept generating player experimentation and content long after release. The studio continued building on the same perception-bending identity for its next projects.
