Pokémon GO plays on the real map — Ingress players' landmarks become PokéStops and Gyms

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company wanted Pokémon on phones, but the franchise's fantasy is exploring the outdoors. Niantic, a Google spinoff, had spent years crowdsourcing roughly 15 million real-world points of interest for its AR game Ingress — a map no single studio could have drawn alone.
How it works
Pokémon GO is a mobile game whose board is the real world. When it launched in July 2016, streets, parks and landmarks filled with players walking to catch Pokémon — because Niantic built the game's geography out of locations that real people had already submitted and approved, rather than a fictional map.
The data came from Ingress, Niantic's earlier augmented-reality game. From its early years onward, Niantic seeded Ingress with public artwork and historical markers mined from geotagged photos, then asked players to submit places worthy of becoming portals; CEO John Hanke told Mashable there were about 15 million submissions, of which roughly 5 million were approved worldwide. Pokémon GO reused that database: the most popular portals in an area became Gyms, the rest PokéStops.
Niantic then matched Pokémon species to habitats — water Pokémon near streams and lakes, grass Pokémon in parks — using geographic classification data. The design intent, explained to Wired, was that anyone could pick the game up easily: no intimidating competitive barrier, and the game pointed players outside, at the world rather than at the screen.
Within a month the game had been downloaded more than 100 million times on Google Play alone, outpacing Facebook Messenger, YouTube Music and Snapchat, per Variety. Retailers reported more foot traffic and Niantic struck a McDonald's Japan partnership to bring players into stores. The idea — turn user-generated world data into a game board — became Niantic's signature model.
Why it lands
- The map was the hardest asset to build, so Niantic reused five years of Ingress players' submissions instead of drawing one.
- Making real landmarks the game objects (PokéStops, Gyms) gave every neighborhood a local reason to play.
- Habitat-based spawning aligned the game world with the physical world, so the phone encouraged walking rather than couch play.
- Easy onboarding let non-gamers and kids join without the intimidation of Ingress's hyper-competitive team play.
What it did
Launched July 2016, Pokémon GO crossed 100 million downloads on Google Play within about a month, out-downloading Facebook Messenger, YouTube Music and Snapchat. Players flooded parks and landmarks; retailers reported higher sales, and Niantic partnered with McDonald's Japan to drive in-store traffic.

A studio doesn't have to draw the map or invent the culture — it can reuse years of user-generated world data, then give that data a new game to live in.
Since then
Pokémon GO became a cultural phenomenon within weeks and a lasting franchise: Niantic kept expanding it with events, raids and augmented-reality features, and the real-world-as-game-board model carried into later titles. The launch also opened debates about safety and private property — Variety noted a US class action after players approached a homeowner's backyard — and Niantic leaned on criteria that kept locations pedestrian-safe and publicly accessible. The game still operates worldwide more than a decade on.
