Cocoon: worlds-within-worlds puzzles win TGA 2023 Best Debut Indie Game
Ex-Playdead designer Jeppe Carlsen makes each orb a world you carry into other worlds — no text, rules taught by level design alone.
Geometric Interactive
What it had to solve
After Limbo and Inside, lead gameplay designer Jeppe Carlsen and art director Erwin Kho left Playdead to found Geometric Interactive. Their debut had to carry a single mechanical idea — worlds within worlds — and teach it without a single word.
How it works
Cocoon, released 29 September 2023, is the debut of Geometric Interactive — the studio Jeppe Carlsen (lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside) and art director Erwin Kho founded after leaving Playdead. Its core idea is one sentence: every world in the game exists inside an orb the player carries, and those orbs can be brought into other worlds.
That single metaphor generates the whole puzzle vocabulary. An orb is an item that activates switches, and it is also a place to jump into; abilities unlocked inside one world become tools inside another, so solutions chain across nesting realities. To keep the mechanic feeling alien, the game contains no dialogue, no text and no tutorial prompts — every rule is taught through small locked-in spaces and level geometry, a discipline Carlsen says left the designers 'no easy way out'.
The restraint paid off. Cocoon won Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards 2023 and drew near-universal praise — Eurogamer 5/5, IGN 9/10, Polygon 'impossibly good' — with GoNintendo calling it a revolution for puzzle design. The optional secret ending, guarded by five-digit codes hidden in sound and scenery, was cracked by the community about a week after release, and the developers watched the hunt unfold in real time.
Why it lands
- A single mechanical metaphor — worlds are items you carry — generates an entire genre of puzzles, from carrying orbs to chaining abilities across nested realities.
- Banning text and tutorial prompts forced the team to teach every rule through level design, making discoveries feel earned rather than explained.
- It comes from the lead designer of Limbo and Inside, a proven creator betting a whole studio on one original idea.
- The hidden ending turned the post-game into a communal hunt, with players cracking the secret codes within about a week.
What it did
Launched 29 Sep 2023 and won Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards 2023. Eurogamer gave 5/5, IGN 9/10; Polygon called it 'impossibly good'. Players cracked the hidden five-digit-code secret ending about a week after release, and GoNintendo called it 'the evolution of the puzzle genre'.
What you can take
One legible metaphor — 'every world is an item you carry' — can power a whole game if every puzzle obeys it. Dropping text forced level design to teach the rules, so discoveries feel earned.
Since then
After the TGA win, Cocoon stayed in the puzzle canon: critics kept citing it as the genre's evolution, and the community's week-long secret hunt became an example of how hidden content can extend a game's life. For Carlsen and Kho, it proved a small, idea-led studio could compete with AAA spectacle on design alone. The game was published by Annapurna Interactive and shipped on PC, consoles and Switch.
