Saturnbird Coffee (三顿半)

创意是什么Turn empty canisters into a recurring brand ritual: an annual Return Voyage where users bring cans to partner cafés, trading them for merch and charity points.脱胎换骨

当时的题目

Saturnbird sold coffee in small plastic canisters that users finished in minutes, and customers kept asking what to do with the empties; the obvious answers — deposit schemes or mail-in recycling — were costly, boring and easy to ignore.

它是怎么成立的

Saturnbird Coffee (三顿半) built its business on tiny numbered canisters of super-soluble coffee that people drink in seconds — which meant the brand also created millions of small plastic empties. Customers started asking what to do with the cans, and the team spent months thinking before answering with something that was not a recycling box but a ritual.

The Return Voyage (返航计划) launched in August 2019. During set windows, users book a slot in the brand mini-program and bring their empty canisters to "return points" — partner cafés and lifestyle stores in their own cities — where they exchange cans for brand merchandise and, from season three onward, charity points that fund real projects.

The design made partners true beneficiaries rather than helpers: Saturnbird ships all supplies in advance, volunteers called "Da Fu" staff each site, and partner cafés gain new foot traffic. The program grew from a handful of stores to 56 cities and 196 cafés by its fifth season, and by 2024 it had served 300,000+ users who returned nearly 40M canisters, with hundreds of partner brands and 10,000+ volunteers involved.

What started as an environmental gesture became the brand's most distinctive asset: one season alone brought 100,000 new users into the mini-program at a 95% conversion rate, competitors copied the format, and founder Wu Jun later elevated sustainability into one of Saturnbird's three formal business lines.

妙在哪

  • It converted a product liability — the empty canister — into a reason to buy again, since every cup consumed becomes fuel for the next exchange.
  • It made the program social and physical: users had to walk into a real café, talk to staff and see other collectors, creating experiences no online ad can copy.
  • It built a win-win network: partner cafés get foot traffic and supplies for free, volunteers get a role in the brand story, and Saturnbird gets loyal users.
  • It kept compounding: every season adds content, user stories, partners and data, so the program's value grows without new ad spend.

做出来什么

By 2024 the program had drawn 300,000+ users and nearly 40M returned canisters in five years, involving hundreds of partner brands and 10,000+ volunteers; one season alone converted 100,000 people into mini-program users at a 95% conversion rate. The format was widely copied by other coffee brands, and recycling became Saturnbird's second business line.

可以借走的

Give a cost — product waste — a journey: users crossing a city to return a can and get something back turns recycling into ritual, partners into beneficiaries, and the program into loyalty.

后来

The program has run continuously since 2019. In 2024 founder Wu Jun named it one of Saturnbird's three business lines — alongside retail coffee and the food brand — and the new Shanghai store opened a workshop that 3D-prints merchandise from recycled can material, closing the loop. The official page now counts 80 cities, 646 collection points, 350,000+ returning users and over 46 million returned canisters.
