Samyang's Buldak turns extreme spice into a global challenge — 8bn packs by 2025
Launched in 2012 for niche spice lovers, Buldak ramen became a global challenge after a 2014 eating video; exports hit $700M and 8bn packs have sold.
Samyang Foods
当时的题目
Samyang, the pioneer of Korean instant noodles, was still recovering from a false 1989 food-safety scandal and the 1997 Asian crisis. In 2010, Kim Jung-soo — who had joined the family firm's sales department in 1998 — watched people sweating over a spicy chicken stir-fry and ordered the developers to keep raising the heat.
它是怎么成立的
Samyang Foods invented Korean instant noodles in 1961, but by the 2000s it was a struggling also-ran, still paying off debts from a false beef-fat scandal and the 1997 Asian crisis. The product that turned it around came from a family member's lunch: in spring 2010, Kim Jung-soo watched diners sweat over a spicy chicken stir-fry and told her food scientists she wanted that heat in a ramen. 'My reaction?' recalled the chief food scientist. 'It was, "She's actually going to sell this?"'
Buldak (fire chicken) ramen reached stores in 2012 and initially flopped — retailers and consumers said it was too spicy. But Samyang had aimed it at 'young and audacious people who would challenge themselves with spicy instant noodle for fun', and in February 2014 the British YouTuber Korean Englishman posted a video of friends and family eating the noodles in London: milk sprayed, tongues wiped, sweaters peeled off. The clip drew about 11 million views and set off a worldwide welter of 'fire noodle challenges'.
Samyang leaned into the phenomenon instead of chasing it: it expanded the line into cheese, carbonara, mala and extra-spicy 2x variants, ran production around the clock, and later added halal-certified versions for Southeast Asia. The challenge culture did the advertising — by 2018 there were more than a million fire-noodle challenge videos on YouTube, and American competitive eater Matt Stonie's 15-bowl video alone amassed 145 million views.
The numbers followed: 400 million Buldak packs in 2017, exports climbing from $100M in 2017 to $700M by mid-2024 (90%+ of Samyang's exports), and cumulative sales past 8 billion packs in the first half of 2025 — about a billion packs a year in roughly 100 countries. Samyang's revenue rose from $224M in 2015 to $893M in 2023, around 75% of it from overseas.
妙在哪
- The idea is a product built to provoke a reaction — the pain-and-pleasure eating moment is the campaign itself.
- Samyang named its target out loud: young people who would challenge themselves for fun, letting the audience star.
- The company embraced virality operationally — variants, halal lines and round-the-clock production scaled with the challenge.
- One consumer video turned a niche product into the engine of a corporate recovery, proving the product idea could carry the brand.
做出来什么
Buldak sold 400 million packs in 2017 (1 billion cumulative); exports rose from $100M (2017) to $700M in the year to June 2024, when Buldak was over 90% of Samyang's exports and earned the $700M Export Tower. Cumulative sales passed 8 billion packs by mid-2025, with H1 2025 revenue of 1.08 trillion won, up 33.6%.
可以借走的
Let the audience star: Samyang made a product so extreme that eating it is entertainment — the discomfort is the hook and the audience creates the content.
后来
Buldak became the global icon of K-spicy food: roughly one billion packs sold annually in about 100 countries, exports reaching $700M in 2024 with Buldak over 90% of Samyang's shipments, and cumulative sales past 8 billion packs by mid-2025. Samyang's stock rose tenfold as revenue grew from $224M (2015) to $893M (2023), and the company is building its first overseas plant in China, due in 2027 — a turnaround built on one family member's insistence that the heat go up.
