Brian Eno, producer of records that defined the 1970s, kept hitting the same wall: studio panic made him forget there were other ways of working, and tangential attacks on a problem often proved more interesting than the direct head-on approach. His painter friend Peter Schmidt had independently collected almost identical one-line instructions; when the two compared notes they merged their sets and published them in 1975.

The deck became the recording studio's best-known anti-block tool. Eno used it in his own sessions, and later bands adopted the method itself: when he worked with Coldplay he handed each member a random card to interpret during jams, and Phoenix bought a deck rather than hire him. Editions stayed small — hundreds to a thousand copies — until the fifth edition and an iPhone app arrived in 2009.
