Seiichi Miyake
Seiichi Miyake
When Japanese inventor Seiichi Miyake learned that a friend was losing his sight, he realised how dependent blind pedestrians are on others to cross streets and find their way. In 1965 he began developing tactile blocks — known in Japan as tenji blocks — that could be read by foot or white cane.
The Okayama crossing proved the idea, and tenji blocks were rolled out across Japan and made mandatory at railway stations within a decade. The same bumps-and-bars language then spread around the world to become standard accessible design, and Google honoured Miyake with a Doodle on the invention's 52nd anniversary in 2019.
