When Japanese inventor Seiichi Miyake learned that a friend was losing his sight, he realised how dependent blind pedestrians are on others to cross streets and find their way. In 1965 he began developing tactile blocks — known in Japan as tenji blocks — that could be read by foot or white cane.

Realising how much blind pedestrians depended on others to cross streets and find their way, he spent his own money to develop a system of tactile blocks — known in Japan as tenji blocks — that could be felt by foot or white cane.
Miyake's design used two tile patterns: raised dots to signal danger, such as platform edges, stairs and crossings, and raised bars to mark a safe route. On 18 March 1967 the first 230 blocks were laid at the street crossing in front of the Okayama School for the Blind in Okayama City, giving the tiles a real daily-life test by the students who needed them.
The single street crossing proved the system: tenji blocks were rolled out across Japan and made mandatory at railway stations within a decade, and the same language of bumps and bars spread to cities around the world. In 2019, Google celebrated the invention with a Doodle on its 52nd anniversary, sixty years after the first blocks went into the ground.
Why it lands

Since then

Japanese railways adopted it nationwide in the 1970s, and cities across the world followed; the tenji block is regularly cited as one of the most quietly transformative public designs of the twentieth century.
