Lay's gives potato farmers a satellite early-warning app — Spikes Creative Data Grand Prix
Lay's and Leo Burnett turn PepsiCo's contract-farming data into Smart Farm: satellite + AI alerts on farmers' phones that save crops from climate-driven losses.

当时的题目
India's potato growers traditionally follow predictable seasonal patterns, but erratic climate change now costs Lay's farmers about 20% of their crop every year. PepsiCo had a decade of contract-farming data with those growers — but no way to turn it into timely, usable advice.
它是怎么成立的
Indian potato farming has long followed predictable seasonal patterns, but erratic climate change broke that rhythm — Lay's contract farmers were losing about 20% of their crop every year. PepsiCo had spent a decade partnering with those growers, which meant it held historical farm data no rival could copy, yet the information wasn't reaching the fields in time.
Leo Burnett Mumbai's answer was Smart Farm, built with agtech provider Cropin: a real-time monitoring system that combines satellite imagery, remote sensing, AI and weather forecasting to generate early warnings about threats to the crop. The warnings are deliberately simple — color codes delivered to farmers' smartphones — so a grower knows where and what intervention is needed without reading dashboards.
The platform drew on PepsiCo's decade-long farmer relationships and was rolled out to the 27,000 farmers Lay's works with across India, turning traditional practices into climate-smart, algorithmically mediated ones. For the brand, it also protected the potato supply that feeds Lay's chips.
Smart Farm won the Creative Data Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2024, plus two Silvers, and a Silver Lion in Creative Data at Cannes 2023, along with ABBY 2024 awards. The idea became a template for turning corporate supply-chain data into a public service.
妙在哪
- It used an asset only PepsiCo had — a decade of contract-farming data — and turned it into a tool rather than an ad.
- The alert system is delivered in the farmer's own context: simple color codes on phones, not agricultural software.
- It aligned the brand's interest (a stable potato supply) with the farmers' interest (saving their crop), so the program could scale.
- Early warnings arrive before damage becomes irreversible, which is the difference between advice and a product.
做出来什么
Farmers receive predictive intelligence before crops hit irreversible damage. The campaign won the Creative Data Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2024 plus two Silvers, a Silver in Creative Data at Cannes Lions 2023, and ABBY 2024 metals — becoming a flagship example of a chip brand acting as an agtech platform.
可以借走的
A brand's own supply-chain data can be the creative idea: instead of ads about climate change, give farmers at the start of the chain a tool that makes farming resilient.
后来
Smart Farm became a pillar of PepsiCo India's climate-resilient farming story. After the Cannes 2023 Silver, it won the Creative Data Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2024 and ABBY 2024 recognition, and PepsiCo layered adjacent programs on top, including the Biochar Project with Punjab Agricultural University to tackle stubble burning. The initiative is cited in later reporting as proof that AI-based early warnings can protect smallholder potato supply chains, and it continues to appear in award archives as a benchmark for data-driven, purpose-led brand work in India.
