Kakao turns chat emoticons into Korea's top character brand and a 1,000-person queue

当时的题目
KakaoTalk owned Korean messaging but depended on ads; its free emoticons were wildly popular, and Kakao saw characters with real personalities as a way to build a brand that could live beyond the chat window.
它是怎么成立的
In November 2012, KakaoTalk launched Kakao Friends as a set of chat emoticons. Designer Hozo (Kwon Soon-ho) built them around the idea that mascots were too polished: Muzi, the brand's yellow 'bunny', is actually a pickled radish wearing a bunny costume, and every character carries a hidden backstory that users discovered and shared.
The stickers became part of daily conversation for a messenger used by 84% of South Korea's population, so Kakao turned affection into a business: the line was spun off as a subsidiary in June 2015, product types grew past 1,500, and on July 2, 2016 the first flagship store opened in Gangnam with a giant Ryan, a 100-seat Ryan cafe and merchandise from pens to slippers — more than 1,000 people lined up in heavy rain on opening day.
The characters then spread beyond the store: licensed to banks for cards, to Coca-Cola and Baskin Robbins for themed products, to Samsung and LG for phones and gadgets. Audited results showed 2016 revenue of 70.5 billion won, roughly seven times the prior year, with a 33.7% operating margin — and a Korean government survey named Kakao Friends the country's most popular character of 2016.
妙在哪
- Each character had a hidden story and imperfection, so they felt like friends rather than corporate mascots
- Free daily use on KakaoTalk made the characters part of millions of conversations before anything was sold
- Owning both digital distribution and offline stores let Kakao monetize affection without depending on ads
- Licensing pushed the characters into banks, phones and food, touching daily life far beyond the app
做出来什么
Opening day drew more than 1,000 people queuing in the rain; 2016 revenue hit 70.5 billion won (about $62 million), up seven-fold in a year with a 33.7% operating margin, and Kakao Friends was voted Korea's most popular character of 2016.
可以借走的
Give digital assets a personality people can love, then let that affection flow into physical retail and licensing — the sticker is the ad, the store is the payoff.
后来
Kakao Friends kept compounding: 2017 sales reached 97.6 billion won with a 25.3 billion won operating profit, stores grew to 22, and the characters moved into AI speakers, mobile games and overseas exports; by 2019, sales passed 100 billion won by the end of the third quarter, the fastest the line had ever reached that mark.
