Humble Indie Bundle (2010): pay what you want, pick the charity split — $1.27M in a week

In 2010 five indie games sold for whatever price each buyer chose, with a slider splitting the money between developers and charity — $1.27M in a week.

当时的题目

Wolfire and five fellow indie studios had great games but no marketing budget and no storefront; piracy and DRM debates raged, and Mac and Linux owners were routinely ignored.

它是怎么成立的

On 4 May 2010 Wolfire Games launched the Humble Indie Bundle: five acclaimed indie games — World of Goo, Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru HD and Penumbra Overture — sold as one package at a price each buyer chose, from zero upwards. Every game was DRM-free and ran on Windows, Mac and Linux, and there was no distributor taking a cut; contributions went straight to the developers and charities minus payment fees.

The twist was the split. By default the money was divided equally among the five studios plus two charities, Child's Play and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, but buyers could drag a slider to allocate their payment however they liked. The announcement video and blog post made the pitch explicit: 'we don't have a marketing budget so please tell your friends about the bundle.'

The mechanics turned pricing into a public experiment. TechCrunch reported over $13,000 raised within the first couple of hours at an average of nearly $8 per buyer — twice the typical price of a single indie game. By the end of the sale the bundle had pulled in $1.27 million, with almost $400,000 going to charity, and founders Jeff Rosen and John Graham incorporated Humble Bundle, Inc. around the idea.

妙在哪

  • Pay-what-you-want replaced the retailer's fixed price with a question each buyer answered personally, which made the transaction itself the story.
  • The charity split slider gave buyers real agency over where money went, turning a purchase into a moral choice worth sharing.
  • No DRM and cross-platform support removed every friction point pirates and platform owners could cite, pre-empting the usual objections.
  • No middleman meant the proceeds visibly reached the developers, so paying more felt meaningful rather than wasted.

做出来什么

The site raised over $13,000 in its first hours with an average donation near $8; by the end, contributors had paid $1.27 million, with almost $400,000 going to charity. Rosen and Graham then started Humble Bundle, Inc. with the bundle as the whole business.

可以借走的

Give buyers control of where their money goes and price becomes a moral act, not a transaction: transparency plus choice outperformed fixed pricing, and buyers marketed the sale themselves.

后来

Rosen and Graham founded Humble Bundle, Inc. after the first sale, and the second bundle in December 2010 repeated the formula with five bigger titles — Braid, Machinarium, Osmos, Cortex Command and Revenge of the Titans. The pay-what-you-want, choose-the-split format became a recurring franchise that kept running for years, and the original one-week experiment was widely credited with proving that transparent, buyer-controlled pricing could out-earn fixed prices.
