Death Stranding makes deliveries a shared world — strangers leave ladders for each other

Kojima replaces combat with deliveries and asynchronous kindness: players find strangers' ladders and bridges.

当时的题目

A post-apocalyptic America where isolated cities are reconnected by porters carrying cargo across hostile terrain — and the game's theme is connection itself.

它是怎么成立的

Hideo Kojima built his first post-Konami game on a deliberately anti-combat premise: in Death Stranding (2019), America has collapsed and the player, porter Sam Bridges, reconnects isolated cities by carrying cargo on foot. The world's real enemy is terrain, rain that ages objects, and the weight on your back. The creative bet was that delivery, the most derided verb in games, could carry a blockbuster.

The deeper invention was the Social Strand System. Players build ladders, ropes, bridges, generators, and eventually entire highways; those structures appear in other players' worlds, and each player can use, repair, and 'like' what a stranger left behind. No one ever meets, chats, or cooperates in real time — the connection is purely asynchronous. Kojima Productions' own beginner's guide documents the mechanic: a ladder left by another player helps you cross a mountain, and your bridge may help someone else.

The gamble paid off. Game Revolution's launch review called the system's effect on the game compelling, and Kojima said in a 2025 PlayStation Blog interview that players were still devotedly building highways five years after release. The sequel, Death Stranding 2, doubled down on the system with monorails and strand contracts — proof that the idea, not its sales, was the point that endured.

妙在哪

  • Asynchronous traces remove the social anxiety of multiplayer while keeping the warmth of being helped.
  • Likes with no currency value test whether appreciation alone can motivate — and it did.
  • Making infrastructure the reward aligned the mechanic with the theme of reconnecting a broken nation.
  • Replacing combat with logistics forced every obstacle — a cliff, a river, a storm — to become a design problem.

做出来什么

The Social Strand System became the game's signature; Kojima says players are still devotedly building highways five years later, and the sequel added monorails and strand contracts around it.

可以借走的

Cooperation doesn't need co-presence: strangers' persistent traces turn a lonely journey into a shared one, and a thank-you with no gameplay value can still be the most motivating reward.

后来

Death Stranding sold strongly at launch and became the defining reference point for 'strand game' discussions in both press and academia. Kojima spent years publicly defending the genre he proposed, and the 2025 sequel built directly on what players did with the first game's system — adding monorails, strand contracts between named players, and features shaped by five years of telemetry from the Social Strand System.
