tonies Tonieplay: kids steer audio games with a controller, no screen — Red Dot BoB 2026
Tonieplay turns the Toniebox into board-game-like audio play: a controller, printed discs and a light ring let children steer stories without a screen.
tonies GmbH (tonies SE)
What it had to solve
The original Toniebox built a global market on screen-free listening, but listening is passive. tonies' product team noticed children turning, tilting and pressing the box in playful ways it never designed, and parents were wary of gaming apps — so the task for Toniebox 2 was to add real interactivity without adding a screen, and to grow the age range towards nine-plus.
How it works
tonies created the category of screen-free audio play for children with the original Toniebox in 2016, but listening alone is passive. Watching families use it, the product team saw children tilting, turning, pressing and experimenting with the box in ways the design had never intended — behaviour the company read as a demand for hands-on interaction, not a bug.
Tonieplay turns that observation into product. Exclusive to Toniebox 2, it adds a board-game layer: printed game discs are placed on the box, and a rounded controller lets children tap, tilt and answer as audio prompts guide them through quizzes, adventures and team challenges; a dynamic LED light ring on the box gives visual feedback. Red Dot's jury noted that interaction never depends on a complex interface — only simple physical actions — and that decisions children make actively steer the course of the story.
The launch was timed with the new hardware: Toniebox 2 went on sale on 15 September 2025 in DACH and October in the US, with twelve Tonieplay titles from PAW Patrol, Gabby's Dollhouse, Winnie the Pooh, Disney classics and tonies' own Lalalinos. The system runs on a proprietary game engine connecting NFC, save games and cloud services, and extends the platform's age range from 3–7 to 1–9+.
The bet paid off quickly. Red Dot awarded Tonieplay Best of the Best in its 2026 Product Design competition, The Independent's multi-month family review reported that children grasped the games instantly, and within days of launch tonies announced it had passed 10 million Tonieboxes sold worldwide — the 10 millionth unit sold was a Toniebox 2 — with 125 million Tonies figurines sold.
Why it lands
- Instead of adding a screen to make stories interactive, tonies added objects — controller, discs, light ring — keeping the brand's screen-free promise intact.
- The design was evidence-led: children's own tilting and pressing of the original box became the core interaction grammar of Tonieplay.
- Audio gaming widened the platform from 3–7 to 1–9+, giving families a reason to move to Toniebox 2 and extending the life of the whole ecosystem.
- Launching with beloved licensed characters meant the new category arrived with content children already recognised instead of asking them to learn a new universe.
What it did
Red Dot's jury named Tonieplay a Best of the Best in Product Design 2026, praising interaction based on simple physical actions rather than complex interfaces. The Independent's long-term review found a four-year-old picked the games up immediately and loved making choices, and sales data shows the gamble landed: tonies passed 10 million Tonieboxes sold worldwide by 23 September 2025, days after launch — the 10 millionth unit was a Toniebox 2.
What you can take
Watch how users 'misuse' your product: the tilts and presses children performed on the original box told tonies exactly what to build — the new interface formalised existing behaviour.
Since then
Tonieplay became the flagship feature of Toniebox 2, winning Red Dot's Best of the Best in Product Design 2026, and The Independent's family review found children grasped the games instantly. Days after launch, tonies announced 10 million Tonieboxes sold worldwide, with 5.5 million in DACH, 2.9 million in North America and over a million in the UK, alongside 125 million figurines. The company keeps expanding the Tonieplay library with licence partners, extending the platform from toddler sets to interactive play for older children while staying free of screens and ads.
