What it had to solve

The broadband router is one of the most ignored objects in a home — functionally central, aesthetically invisible, and usually replaced when technology changes. Telefónica Germany asked Design3 to make a router for its core o2 brand that customers would keep: high performance, obvious sustainability, and a form that fits the living room.

How it works

The o2 HomeBox 4 is the broadband router that Telefónica Germany developed with Hamburg agency Design3 for its core o2 brand — an attempt to treat the most ignored object in the home as a design object. Launched in May 2026, it combines WiFi 7 performance for DSL and fiber with a deliberately sustainable construction.

Instead of hiding the technical requirements, the design makes them visible: the cooling architecture becomes the router's defining aesthetic feature. The housing is a single-material shell made of 95% recycled ABS; labels and graphics are laser-engraved rather than printed, including braille; and the compact, repairable construction enables disassembly, refurbishment and recycling. The router is rented for €4.99 per month, so o2 keeps ownership and with it the incentive to make the device last.

The sustainability is measurable: about 62% of the materials come from recycling, an inactivity mode cuts power use, and the FSC-certified recycled packaging doubles as the shipping carton with the quick guide printed on it. The router won four Red Dot awards in 2026, including Best of the Best in both Product Design and Sustainable Design, after an earlier Green Product Award Editor's Choice win.

What it did

The HomeBox 4 launched on the German market in May 2026 as a €4.99-per-month add-on to o2's DSL and fiber tariffs, with an integrated fiber modem so customers moving from DSL to glass fiber keep the same device. Telefónica described the project as the starting point of a new sustainability strategy in its hardware development; the router carried TÜV Green Product certification and had already won the Green Product Award before it went on sale.
