What it had to solve
TemPolor, the company behind the Tunee AI music service, set out to remove the two barriers that stop most people from making music — the dexterity to play and the theory needed to compose. The brief was an instrument that feels approachable to a beginner but useful to a professional.
How it works
TemPolor set out to solve the statistic behind guitar abandonment: '90% of people who pick up a guitar quit within a year — not because they lack talent, because the instrument never met them where they are.' Its answer, Melo-D, is billed as the world's first generative-AI guitar and won Red Dot Best of the Best 2026 for Product Design.
The instrument keeps the familiar acoustic silhouette — real strings, strumming and picking — but rebuilds everything else around AI. A patented hinge folds the body to 18.4 inches, six rainbow-lit RGB strings double as visual guides, a 2.4-inch touchscreen runs everything on board, and the TemPolor.AI engine converts a hummed melody into a solo, a text prompt into a full song with lyrics, or an uploaded track into fingerstyle tabs in under three minutes.
TemPolor's stated goal was to 'lower the barrier between inspiration and creation'. The guitar offers light-guided Rhythm Game modes with 7-chord and 21-chord difficulty, ten built-in tones from acoustic to guzheng, and fully standalone operation — no phone, no studio app, no music theory required.
The bet paid off twice: Kickstarter backers pledged £38,389 against a £3,800 goal in the campaign's early days, and the design jury honoured it with both the Red Dot Best of the Best 2026 and iF Design Award 2026, with a juror saying the Melo-D 'is fun to play without seeming like a toy, and it instantly made us all musicians'.
