Samsung's S95H rejects the invisible-TV trend — Red Dot Best of the Best 2026

S95H floats an ultra-thin OLED in front of a visible metal plate, making the TV a deliberate design object again.

What it had to solve

Ultra-thin, borderless televisions had become so uniform that buyers could not tell brands apart; Samsung asked whether a dark screen alone can still feel like a compelling object in a living space.

How it works

For years the design race in TVs ran toward maximum slimness, flush integration and a screen that disappears into the wall. Samsung's designers concluded the result had erased the product: front-facing bezel-less TVs all look alike, and a bare dark panel is a weak object to live with.

The S95H OLED reverses that logic. Its FloatLayer construction places an ultra-thin screen in front of a visible, precision-finished metal plate, so the display seems to float and its structure becomes part of the design. Speakers and ventilation hide between the layers, a flush mount makes the set hang like a framed picture, and magnetic accessories let owners change its look.

The jury wrote that while most TVs try to be unobtrusive, the S95H commits to creating presence in the room, turning the product back into an object. All 16 Samsung entries at Red Dot 2026 won awards, with the S95H and the Bespoke AI laundry series taking the two Best of the Best prizes.

Why it lands

  • Differentiation: when every screen is borderless, a visible frame and layered build become the signature.
  • User insight: Samsung found people value how a TV fits and enriches a room more than absolute thinness.
  • Craft as communication: detailing the rear and frame makes the object rewarding even when the screen is off.
  • Restraint: the design is present but precise, so presence does not tip into decoration.

What it did

The S95H won Red Dot's Best of the Best in Product Design 2026 and helped Samsung take two top prizes out of 16 entries; the jury praised its conscious move from invisibility to presence.

What you can take

When a category converges on the same trick, the differentiating move can be reversing it — making the product visibly present instead of invisible.

Since then

Samsung framed the award as validation of an 'expressive' design philosophy that treats electronics as objects reflecting taste rather than functions to be hidden; the same Best of the Best run also honored the Bespoke AI laundry family built on the same idea of harmonizing appliances with interiors.
