Crunching chips expose a lying worker in Sushinoko's ACC-winning radio comedy
A 90-second radio farce of a worker swearing he isn't eating chips while every crunch betrays him — selling 61-year-old Sushinoko powder as a chip topping.
Tamanoi Vinegar (Sushinoko)
What it had to solve
Sushinoko is Tamanoi Vinegar's powdered sushi vinegar — sold since 1963 as the world's first powdered sushi vinegar, the easy way to make sushi rice. On social media, users had been posting that sprinkling it on potato chips is delicious, a use the brand had never advertised, and Tamanoi decided to make that user-invented usage the message of its radio advertising.
How it works
Sushinoko is Tamanoi Vinegar's powdered sushi vinegar, on sale since 1963 as the world's first product of its kind: sprinkle it on rice and stir to make sushi rice without measuring liquid vinegar. Decades in, its obvious use had become a niche one, but fans on social media had found another — posting that sprinkling sushinoko on potato chips is delicious — and the brand chose to build its radio campaign around that unadvertised habit.
The 90-second spot, OTOMORE, is a phone-call farce in Osaka dialect. A subordinate late for a meeting calls his boss; the crunching is audible through the phone, and while he insists he is stuck on a station platform, the boss is not fooled — 'You're eating chips at home, aren't you!' The joke plays on the double meaning of 'home', and the published script contains no music: only ringtone, doorbell, dialogue and the 'pari pari pari' crunching carry the story. The voice-over closes with a mock safety warning: two tablespoons in a chip bag and you may not be able to stop.
At the 2024 ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS, OTOMORE won the Grand Prix in the radio CM category, plus craft prizes for its copy and for the acting, and copywriter Kensuke Harada was named TCC top newcomer the same year. For a 61-year-old pantry staple, the campaign marked a shift in voice: instead of teaching consumers how to make sushi rice, the brand celebrated the potato-chip trick that users had invented for themselves.
Why it lands
- The comedy came from the user's discovery, not from the brand: sushinoko on chips was already a loved idea on social media, so the ad only had to dramatize it.
- Radio's weakness — no pictures — became the point: the crunching sound is at once the proof, the gag and the memory hook.
- Ninety seconds of escalating denial made a utilitarian pantry product funny instead of instructional, which is what makes someone try a new use.
- The sign-off warning ('two tablespoons and you won't be able to stop') turned product dosage into the punchline — instruction as comedy.
What it did
OTOMORE took the Grand Prix in the radio CM category at the 2024 ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS, and the same spot added craft prizes for copy and for acting — three trophies in total. Copywriter Kensuke Harada also received the TCC top newcomer award for the work in August 2024, and audio-industry coverage cited the spot as a model of sound-driven storytelling.
What you can take
When users invent a new use, make the ad a joke about that use rather than a demonstration — the crunching and the lie did the selling with no explanation at all.
Since then
OTOMORE became one of the most-cited Japanese radio ads of the year, collecting the ACC radio Grand Prix, craft prizes for copy and acting, and the TCC top newcomer award for its copywriter. Trade coverage used the spot as proof that a purely audio idea can carry a product relaunch, and Tamanoi's own announcement framed the three trophies as recognition for communicating a new use of a 61-year-old product through nothing but conversation and chewing sounds.
