What it had to solve
Glico's Almond Premio and Dear Cacao target 20-to-30-somethings — adults who grew up on Sazae-san, the never-aging national anime whose rights holder had never licensed a live-action adaptation of any kind.
The idea
Advance Japan's never-aging cartoon exactly 25 years: the Sazae-san siblings reunite in live action, characters and buyers finally the same age.
How it works
Agency Shingata with Dentsu proposed what stunned even the Hasegawa Machiko Art Foundation: lend the setting only, live action, no damaging the image. Filmed as a family memorial at a faithfully rebuilt Isono house: Wakame (Rie Miyazawa) serving tea, Tarao (Eita), salaryman Ikura (Shun Oguri) arriving in a supercar, an aging Katsuo (Tadanobu Asano) with baseball glove. Sazae and her father never appear — igniting weeks of 'who could play them' debate. Further episodes followed through 2008-09.
What it did
The 'Saikai' premiere drove nationwide buzz and casting debates across blogs and news; the four-spot series took TCC's top prize for 2009 and ranked No. 2 in the TV CM division of the 2009 ACC CM Festival. Glico kept the Otona Glico platform alive for years with the same adult-cast logic (Miyazawa later fronting trips to Tohoku with Kimura and Otsuka).
Background
Sazae-san is Japan's most guarded piece of pop culture: an anime that never ages, run by a foundation that had never granted a live-action license. In September 2008 Ezaki Glico asked for exactly that — not the characters, only the setting, 25 years on — to launch Almond Premio and Dear Cacao, chocolates for adults.
The spots open at a memorial service held in a replica of the Isono house. Wakame, now played by Rie Miyazawa, welcomes her brothers and nephews: Tarao (Eita), Ikura (Shun Oguri, in a suit with a supercar outside) and Katsuo (Tadanobu Asano, still carrying a baseball glove). The caption reads 'minna otona ni natte' — everyone has grown up. Sazae herself and her father never appear, and the absence itself became the story: news and blogs ran for weeks on who could possibly play them.
The math is the whole idea. The 20-30-somethings buying the chocolate had watched the cartoon as children; aged by 25 years, the characters land at precisely that same age. Nostalgia here is not a rerun — it is a reunion the buyer is old enough to attend, which is why Glico's own PR framed the campaign as empathy rather than tribute.
The foundation's gamble held: 'the image is not damaged', and the industry rewarded it — TCC's top prize for 2009, then No. 2 in the TV CM division of the 2009 ACC CM Festival for the four-spot series ('Saikai', 'Test', 'Work & Yatai', 'The Siblings Now').
Why it lands
The 25-year offset is the creative: it makes the license feel inevitable rather than borrowed, and no competitor could do the same arithmetic twice.
Withholding Sazae kept the property intact and the conversation running — absence is cheaper and safer than a miscast national icon.
Casting used the era's most-watched young actors at the exact ages of the characters, so the press did the media buy's work.
The rights negotiation shaped the form: asking only for the setting, live action, forced a restrained execution that read as homage instead of parody.
What you can take
Nostalgia converts when the audience and the characters meet in the middle: don't replay the property, advance it exactly as many years as your buyers have lived.
Since then
Glico extended the Otona Glico platform for years: a second wave of Isono spots aired from November 2008 (revealing the future careers of Ikura and Tarao), and the brand followed with a grown-up Hello Kitty and, from 2011, documentary-style train trips through Tohoku with Rie Miyazawa, Mie Kimura and Nanako Otsuka. Glico's adult line, led by Almond Premio, remains a fixture of the snack aisle. The foundation has never again licensed a full live-action Sazae-san drama.
