KFC Thailand sends its 'wrong' kaprao to jail in a comedy film — MAD STARS Grand Prix

KFC's 'wrong' kaprao lands in the Unauthentic Kaprao Jail — the launch became KFC's most successful rice menu and won a MAD STARS Grand Prix.

KFC Thailand

The idea'The Kaprao Criminals' locks every 'wrong' kaprao — including KFC's — in a fictional Unauthentic Kaprao Jail, turning a national food debate into entertainment.substantial

What it had to solve

Kaprao — Thailand's unofficial national dish and its most-ordered menu — is fiercely protected: adding onions, corn or long beans is treated as a food crime. KFC's new Kaprao Crispy Chicken Rice Bowl risked being judged 'wrong' by the very culture it wanted to sell to.

How it works

Kaprao is Thailand's unofficial national dish — its number-one most-ordered menu, something people eat daily and defend fiercely. Adding onions, corn or long beans is not a preference; it is judged as a food crime, closer to the Italian pineapple-on-pizza fight than a menu debate. When KFC Thailand launched its Kaprao Crispy Chicken Rice Bowl, many Thais could reasonably see it as leaning toward the 'wrong' side of the dish.

Rather than deny that, KFC embraced it. With Wolf BKK it made 'The Kaprao Criminals', an absurdist Thai comedy set in a fictional Unauthentic Kaprao Jail, where every 'wrong' version of the dish is locked up — including Uncle KFC himself. The film plays on the exaggerated social belief that once you break the kaprao law you are guilty enough to go to jail: no exceptions, not even KFC, because no brand is bigger than Thai taste.

The film reframed the debate with a simple message: there is no right or wrong kaprao, just be honest about what kind you are, and let people choose — that alone should never be a crime. Directed by Suneta House's Teera, it turned criticism into participation and, per HAKUHODO, drove nationwide engagement and resulted in KFC Thailand's most successful rice-menu launch.

The idea then travelled through the award circuit: MAD STARS 2026 gave it the Film Stars Grand Prix for Cultural Insight plus three Golds and two Silvers, Cannes Lions 2026 added two Bronze Lions, and Spikes Asia 2026 a Gold and a Silver.

Why it lands

  • Kaprao is a living cultural debate, so the campaign stepped into a conversation Thais were already having instead of starting a new one.
  • Turning KFC's own product into the joke disarmed the 'wrong recipe' criticism and made the brand part of the culture rather than an invader of it.
  • The deadpan absurdity — the Colonel in kaprao jail — made the message shareable beyond the launch window.
  • Honesty as strategy: admitting the dish deviates and letting people choose respects the audience's taste, exactly what a sacred-category launch needs.

What it did

The campaign drove nationwide engagement and became KFC Thailand's most successful rice-menu launch (per HAKUHODO). It won the MAD STARS 2026 Film Stars Grand Prix for Cultural Insight plus three Golds and two Silvers, two Cannes 2026 Bronze Lions and a Spikes Asia 2026 Gold.

What you can take

Entering a sacred category? Don't dodge the controversy — lean in and mock yourself; turning criticism into entertainment wins over skeptics and makes a contested product a talking point.

Since then

The Kaprao Criminals ran as the launch campaign for the limited-time Kaprao Crispy Chicken Rice Bowl and became KFC Thailand's most successful rice-menu launch. Its award run continued through 2026: the MAD STARS Film Stars Grand Prix for Cultural Insight with three Golds and two Silvers, two Bronze Lions at Cannes (Film Craft: Casting; Film: Use of Humour), a Gold and Silver at Spikes Asia, and further metals at White Square and the New York Festivals. It is now cited as a model for entering a culturally protected category with self-deprecating humor.
