Perfect Diary turns Chinese landscapes into a 16-shade National Geographic palette
Perfect Diary launches four landscape palettes at Paris Fashion Week's Tmall China Cool show; Weibo topic hits 110M reads, 130,000+ pre-sales.
Perfect Diary (完美日记) · Chinese National Geography (中国国家地理)
What it had to solve
Perfect Diary, founded in 2017, had grown fast on Tmall but its co-branding risked looking generic. For autumn 2019 it partnered with Chinese National Geography (中国国家地理) and launched at the Tmall China Cool show during Paris Fashion Week on September 29, as the event's only official makeup brand.
How it works
Perfect Diary, the Guangzhou beauty brand founded in 2017, had grown through aggressive co-branding, but in 2019 it wanted something with a cultural core. With Chinese National Geography it created 'Fantasy Home 16-Color Eyeshadow' — four four-shade palettes named Red Glow Danxia, Pink Mist Plateau, Blue Lakes and Terraced Light, with individual shades named from traditional Chinese color words and pressed powder embossed like landforms.
The launch was staged at the Tmall China Cool show during Paris Fashion Week on September 29, 2019, where Perfect Diary was the only official makeup brand, creating looks for the Eifini and Peacebird shows. A cinematic TVC presented the four landscapes as the source of Chinese color; KOLs showed the palette's looks from Paris on Weibo.
The market responded immediately. By early November, the campaign's Weibo topic had 110 million reads and 84,000 discussions; Tmall pre-sales opened October 26 and exceeded 130,000 orders, with 131,651 monthly transactions recorded in a case write-up. Perfect Diary held Tmall's #1 color-cosmetics rank for ten consecutive months through October 2019.
The palette became a standard reference for 'guochao' beauty: state media cited it as an example of Chinese manufacturing and aesthetics meeting, and marketing commentary names it one of the two breakout co-brandings of 2019, alongside the Discovery 'animal' palette.
Why it lands
- Real landscapes gave the product a story bigger than a logo — every shade had a named place behind it.
- The Paris Fashion Week debut made a mass-market palette feel like couture and gave KOLs ready-made content.
- Traditional color names and landform embossing made the palette an object worth collecting and photographing.
- The cultural framing fit the guochao wave, earning free state-media and commentary coverage beyond paid reach.
What it did
The campaign's Weibo topic reached 110 million reads and 84,000 discussions by early November; Tmall pre-sales since October 26 exceeded 130,000 orders (131,651 monthly transactions); Perfect Diary held the #1 Tmall color-cosmetics spot for ten straight months through October 2019.
What you can take
Giving a product a cultural system — real places, traditional color names, embossed landforms — turns a collab into something collectible and shareable, not just a logo swap.
Since then
The palette became one of Perfect Diary's most cited collaborations and a reference point for Chinese beauty co-branding; later 2020 co-brandings (Oreo, Sanrio, Li Jiaqi's pet Never) followed the same playbook of product-first stories. The 2019 launch is consistently named, with the Discovery 'animal' palette, as the year's two breakout beauty co-brandings in Chinese marketing commentary.
