Kundal's Pink Glove turns Korea's bathhouse scrub mitt into a breast self-exam guide

A self-exam guide printed on Korea's ubiquitous scrub glove sells out twice and becomes a permanent Kundal product line.

The ideaTurn Korea's universal bathhouse scrub glove into a printed step-by-step breast self-exam guide, so checking happens naturally inside the weekly bathing ritual.substantial

What it had to solve

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Korean women and Korea's incidence has climbed roughly 30% in five years, yet conservative culture makes bodies a taboo topic: self-exam awareness stayed low, brands avoided the subject, and earlier awareness work modelled runways and pink ribbons rather than behaviour.

How it works

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Korean women, and Cheil Magazine reported Korea's incidence rose about 30% over five years. Yet the country's conservative culture treated women's bodies as a taboo topic, so understanding of breast self-examination stayed low, brands stayed silent on the subject, and the awareness ads that existed showed runways and pink ribbons instead of changing what women did.

Cheil Worldwide's answer was to stop talking about breasts and redesign an object every Korean household already owns: the ttae-soo-geon scrub glove used at the bathhouse. Working with the Korean Breast Cancer Society, Cheil printed step-by-step self-exam illustrations onto a pink version of the glove, and boxed it with an illustrated guide card and small Kundal body-care products as a 'Pink Glove kit', launched on October 19, 2023 — World Breast Cancer Day.

Kits were mailed first-come-first-served from Kundal's online store, and demand surprised everyone: the first batch sold out on opening day and an emergency second production run sold out in 19 hours. Cheil also distributed kits to eight large bathhouses across Korea from mid-November and trained sesin-sa — professional scrubbers who often find lumps while washing clients — to teach self-examination, with participants earning a Pink Glove certification from the society.

The response turned a one-off stunt into a product: Kundal kept the Pink Glove in its permanent range with the stated goal of one glove for every woman in Korea. The campaign went on to win a Silver at MAD STARS 2024, a Gold in Fashion & Beauty at the 2024 Clio Awards and Silver and Bronze at Clio Health, while Contagious reported roughly 28 million people reached.

Why it lands

  • It borrowed a tool every Korean household already owns and a weekly ritual everyone already keeps, so the new behaviour cost no extra time, money or awkwardness.
  • Printed instructions let a taboo subject be read on a product in a bathhouse context, with no lecture and no body on screen to trigger embarrassment.
  • The product was both the message and the giveaway, so the two sold-out batches turned consumer demand into the campaign's own distribution.
  • Training bathhouse scrubbers placed teachers exactly where women already undress and talk, instead of waiting for women to go looking for health information.

What it did

The first kit batch sold out on launch day and a rushed second batch went in 19 hours; Kundal then made the Pink Glove a permanent product line. The work took a Silver at MAD STARS 2024, a 2024 Clio Fashion & Beauty Gold plus Clio Health Silver and Bronze, and Contagious counted roughly 28 million people reached.

What you can take

Put the healthy behaviour inside a ritual people already repeat: the glove didn't ask Korea to discuss breasts, it made checking part of scrubbing at the bathhouse.

Since then

Kundal kept the Pink Glove in its permanent body-care range and committed to running it until every woman in Korea has one, in Cheil creative director Eugene Park's telling — a rare case of an awareness item becoming a standing SKU. The campaign's awards run stretched through 2024: Silver in Diverse Insights at MAD STARS 2024 in Busan, a Fashion & Beauty Gold at the 2024 Clio Awards in New York, and Silver and Bronze at Clio Health. For the category it showed that a culture where the word 'breast' is shunned can still be reached through an everyday ritual rather than a health lecture.
