A car reviewer test-drives The Shadow Strays' chase car — 'Car Review Gone Astray'

Netflix had Indonesian car reviewer Fitra Eri 'review' The Shadow Strays' bullet-ridden chase car — and won ADFEST 2025's Digital & Social Gold and Grande.

What it had to solve

Netflix Indonesia released Timo Tjahjanto's The Shadow Strays on 17 October 2024. The film is saturated with action and destruction, and its centrepiece is a 23-minute car chase in which the vehicle survives combat, gunshots and explosions. The marketing problem was audience self-selection: a hard action title risked staying a film for action devotees and the director's cult following. Good People Network's stated goal was to make The Shadow Strays a movie everyone could enjoy, not a niche genre event.

How it works

When Netflix Indonesia launched Timo Tjahjanto's The Shadow Strays on 17 October 2024, the film's greatest strength looked like a marketing problem. Its centrepiece is a 23-minute car chase packed with combat, gunshots and explosions, and the launch risk was that audiences would read it as a title only for action fans or followers of the director's cult brand, keeping casual viewers away.

Good People Network's answer reframed the film's most extreme sequence as the premise of a joke. The agency asked Fitra Eri — a car reviewer with millions of Indonesian subscribers — to review the car from the chase, the vehicle that had survived every kind of destruction in the sequence. A trusted reviewer solemnly evaluating a machine no real car could survive turned the movie's hardest spectacle into comedy instead of a barrier to entry.

The collaboration was the strategy rather than an add-on: pairing a violent film with an expert whose authority is about everyday vehicles signalled that The Shadow Strays belonged to everyone, not only to action devotees. The agency's own entry described the shift in exactly those terms — the film was no longer the action-lover's movie or the cult-follower's movie, but a film everyone could enjoy.

The results were recognised at ADFEST 2025, where 'Car Review Gone Astray' took the Gold and the Grande in Digital & Social; the jury credited it with pushing social-era storytelling and using an influencer in a meaningful, contextual way. The title it promoted spent four weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 (61.2 million hours, 25.3 million completed views), entered the global non-English Top 10 within six days of release and appeared in the Top 10 across 85 countries in its first week.

Why it lands

  • The influencer's expertise was adjacent, not identical: a car reviewer brought a trusted format to a film, so the joke arrived inside content his audience already chose to watch.
  • The absurd mismatch — reviewing a car that survived gunfights and explosions — made the film's own spectacle the punchline rather than the reason to stay away.
  • The stated goal was audience expansion, not genre reinforcement: the creative explicitly aimed to turn an action film into a movie everyone could enjoy.
  • The idea was native to Indonesian pop culture, pairing a beloved local creator with a local blockbuster, which is what the jury meant by contextual influencer use.

What it did

The work won the Gold and the Grande in the Digital & Social Lotus at ADFEST 2025. Jury president Noriaki Onoe said it 'pushed the boundaries of social-era storytelling and effectively leveraged influencers in a meaningful and contextual way', adding that it 'didn't just follow trends but used creativity to elevate the impact'. The film the campaign promoted spent four weeks in Netflix's global Top 10, with 61.2 million viewing hours and 25.3 million completed views, entered the global non-English Top 10 within six days of release and reached the Top 10 in 85 countries in its first week; Netflix's country lists ultimately showed the title across 87 markets.

What you can take

Niche entertainment grows when translated into an audience's native format: reviewing the movie like a car let casual viewers laugh at the spectacle instead of being shut out by it.

Since then

At ADFEST 2025 the work took both the Gold and the Grande in Digital & Social; jury president Noriaki Onoe said it pushed the boundaries of social-era storytelling and used an influencer 'in a meaningful and contextual way'. The film it promoted spent four weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 (61.2 million hours, 25.3 million completed views), and Netflix's H2 2024 engagement report counted 72.3 million hours for the title. The case became an awards-circuit example of using creator credibility to widen a genre title's audience.
