MINI needed attention for the Countryman launch in Sweden. The brand promise of escape and nimble city driving called for participation, not another product film.

Launch the Countryman with a GPS game where players physically chased, stole and defended a virtual MINI around Stockholm.

An iPhone app showed the virtual MINI, the player and rival hunters on a live map. Getting within 50 metres captured the car; holding it meant staying outside everyone else's 50-metre radius until the game ended.

Over seven days, 11,413 players moved the virtual car nearly 1,500 km; later case records cite 5 hours 6 minutes average play time and a 108% Swedish sales lift the next quarter.

The Countryman launch needed to feel like MINI, not just describe MINI. In Stockholm, that meant turning the city itself into a playground for speed, escape and pursuit.

The mechanic was simple enough to spread: find the virtual car, get within 50 metres, take it, then run from everyone else. The prize was a real MINI Countryman for whoever held the virtual one at the end.

Because every player could see rivals on the same map, the app created street-level drama. Non-players could still follow the chase online, so the game produced spectators as well as participants.

The results made the stunt more than novelty: case records report 11,413 players, nearly 1,500 km of virtual movement, viewers from 90 countries and a strong sales lift in Sweden.

The rule was instantly understandable and physically hard to complete.

The city was not a backdrop; it was the medium.

The live map made every player both participant and moving advertisement.

The real-car prize connected the game directly to the launched product.

A product benefit becomes memorable when the audience has to enact it. MINI made 'getaway' a rule, a map and a week of physical behavior.

The campaign became a durable example of location-based brand gaming and was later repeated in other cities. It also collected major creative-award attention for mobile and experiential work.
