MDLBEAST turns Soundstorm into a four-district City of Beats — Effie Saudi Gold

Riyadh's mega-festival shrinks its site 40% and reorganizes 14 genre stages into a navigable city around a central Downtown — 500,000 attendees.

What it had to solve

MDLBEAST launched Soundstorm in Riyadh in 2019 and grew it into the Middle East's largest music festival — 250+ artists, record attendance and Guinness marks for the tallest temporary stage and largest LED display. Growth also made it harder to move through: fans complained about navigation and discovery across a sprawling site. For the December 11–13, 2025 edition, the brief to creative partner Bold Creatives was to rebuild the grounds around the audience — to prove the change before day one and make a festival of this scale feel cared-for rather than overwhelming.

How it works

Soundstorm began in 2019 as MDLBEAST's bet that Saudi Arabia's underground music scene could anchor a world-class festival in Riyadh, and by 2024 it was the Middle East's largest — drawing hundreds of thousands of fans, breaking Guinness records for stage height and LED scale, and pulling Saudi music fans home instead of abroad. But the site had grown into a sprawl that was hard to navigate, and fans said discovery across its stages had become the weak point.

For the December 11–13, 2025 edition, creative partner Bold Creatives rebuilt the festival as a city rather than a bigger show. The footprint was cut by roughly 40% and reorganized into four districts named by the cardinal points, each with a distinct musical identity, connected through Downtown — a redesigned central hub of five satellite stages, 40-plus food and drink vendors, fashion and places to pause. Fourteen rebuilt stages included the 65,000-capacity Big Beast, a shipping-container club district in Soundstorm West and the Arabic-wedding-styled 6AG stage for Saudi and regional artists.

The layout was derived from five years of heat-mapping and attendee feedback, with HER-only zones, lounges, bars and pathways designed into the map from the start. Over three days roughly 500,000 people moved through the site, and the reviews read almost uniformly the same way: the city design was why a festival of that scale felt calm, legible and easy to exist inside.

The redesign became a campaign in its own right. 'A City of Beats' won a Gold at the inaugural Effie Awards Saudi Arabia in June 2026 — the Kingdom's first awards program dedicated to marketing effectiveness — and took Finalist and Bronze honors at the 18th Shorty Awards in Entertainment, Rebrand Campaign, Community Engagement and Live Events.

Why it lands

  • The city metaphor gives navigation a story: instead of signs pointing at stages, the site has neighborhoods, districts and a heart, so wayfinding reads as world-building.
  • Shrinking the footprint 40% while adding capacity forced density and energy, and shortened the distances that made previous editions exhausting.
  • Giving each genre its own district put local and regional music on equal footing with global headliners instead of relegating it to a token stage.
  • Downtown gave people reasons to linger — food, side stages, meeting points — so dwell time and cross-genre discovery replaced the sprint between main acts.

What it did

Across December 11–13, 2025, about 500,000 people attended, with reviewers — including Rolling Stone India — arguing that the city layout was exactly why a festival this size felt navigable instead of overwhelming. The redesign anchored what MDLBEAST called its biggest edition yet, and the campaign carried the honors trail: a Gold at the inaugural Effie Awards Saudi Arabia in June 2026, credited to MDLBEAST and The Bold Group, plus Finalist honors in Entertainment, Rebrand Campaign and Community Engagement and a Bronze in Live Events at the 18th Shorty Awards.

What you can take

When an event outgrows its site, don't add space — make it legible: name the neighborhoods, give them a center, and moving through becomes part of the experience.

Since then

As of the June 2026 awards, the redesigned edition was being honored as the creative case for how Soundstorm should run: roughly 500,000 attendees across December 11–13, 2025, more than 250 artists on 14 stages, a Gold at the inaugural Effie Awards Saudi Arabia for MDLBEAST and The Bold Group, and Shorty Awards recognition for the live event and its community engagement. MDLBEAST chief creative officer Baloo described the district system as the new way the festival is built, tightening rather than expanding the site each year.
