Shake Udon creates a new takeout market — ACC 2024 Marketing Effectiveness Grand Prix

After COVID crushed dine-in, Marugame Udon launched a udon you shake in a cup and reframed shaking as dancing — 2.5M servings in 10 weeks, ACC 2024 Grand Prix.

Marugame Udon (Toridoll Holdings)

The ideaServe freshly made udon in a cup you shake; reframe shaking as 'dancing' to tie into Marugame's 'this udon is alive' line and make takeout an emotional ritual.substantial

What it had to solve

After COVID crushed the restaurant industry, Toridoll wanted a V-shaped recovery and a takeout product that would grow the category rather than substitute for dining in. The president showed a prototype cup on the first workday of January 2023, and Hakuhodo had about four months to name, position and communicate it before a launch tied to the day COVID's legal status relaxed.

How it works

Marugame Udon, the handmade sanuki udon chain owned by Toridoll Holdings, entered 2023 still recovering from COVID. On the first workday of January, the president handed his team a prototype cup of udon, broth and vegetables asking what they thought; it was originally meant for an upcoming drive-through store, but tasting it convinced the team it deserved a national launch.

With the launch set for 16 May 2023, the day COVID's legal status relaxed in Japan, Hakuhodo had about four months to name, position and communicate the product. The name 'Marugame Shake Udon' came quickly; the hard part was connecting it to Marugame's brand line 'this udon is alive'. Reviewing old commercials, the team noticed the signature shot showed udon dancing — so shaking became dancing, and the line became 'When the udon dances, your heart dances.'

Shake Udon launched with TV commercials featuring a cover of Kome Kome Club's 'Shake Hip!' and actress Haruka Hara, plus a summer variant and a #shakeudondance challenge. Toridoll positioned it as 'emotional takeout' — a product for people who never visit Marugame and times when they would not normally eat udon, growing the market instead of substituting for dine-in.

Within about two and a half months, Shake Udon sold 2.5 million servings between 16 May and 31 July 2023; takeout-product sales in late July were 148% of the same period a year earlier, and the product was closing in on the udon bento's cumulative 37 million servings. The 64th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS (2024) awarded it the Marketing Effectiveness Grand Prix, praising it as an idea that truly created a market.

Why it lands

  • Shaking is the product: it turns a passive takeaway into a participatory moment that people film and share, so the medium itself spreads the campaign.
  • Reframing 'shake' as 'dance' connected the novelty to Marugame's long-standing brand line, so the new product reinforced the brand instead of diluting it.
  • Designing for the car cup holder and for people who never eat at Marugame widened the addressable market rather than cannibalizing dine-in.
  • Launching on the day COVID restrictions relaxed gave the product a news hook and a timing story, multiplying earned media.

What it did

In about two and a half months the product sold 2.5 million servings, and takeout-product sales in late July 2023 were 148% of the same period a year earlier, approaching the udon bento's cumulative 37 million servings. The 64th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS (2024) gave it the Marketing Effectiveness Grand Prix, with the jury chair praising it for creating a market rather than only solving a business problem.

What you can take

Name the experience, not the feature: turning 'shake' into 'dance' tied a functional novelty to Marugame's core promise and made takeout feel like a treat, not a compromise.

Since then

Shake Udon became the foundation for a yearly innovation rhythm at Marugame: Hakuhodo's consultant says the product established the base that led to 2024's Marugame Udon-ats and further launches. The ACC 2024 Marketing Effectiveness Grand Prix — with the jury noting the team's drive to expand sales channels overseas — recognized the product as a genuine market creation, not just a successful promotion.
