Kinryu turns its dragon's forced tail removal into Osaka's joke — ACC 2025 Grand Prix
Forced to cut its landmark dragon's tail, Osaka's Kinryu Ramen made the scar weep and blamed the neighbour crab — the joke went national, ACC 2025 Grand Prix.
Kinryu Ramen (Kinryu Seimen)
What it had to solve
Kinryu Ramen's dragon sign is one of Dotonbori's landmarks, part of Osaka's famous 3D signboard culture. When the tail overhung neighbouring land, a removal order became final and the tail was cut off in August 2024 — news that drew public criticism and threatened to fix a bad reputation on the brand. Rather than let the removal end the story, Kinryu decided to turn the loss into a humorous shared tale.
How it works
Dotonbori in Osaka is famous for its towering 3D signboards, and the dragon above Kinryu Ramen was one of the street's most photographed landmarks. Then came a legal blow: the dragon's tail overhung neighbouring property, a removal order became final, and in August 2024 the tail was physically cut off. News coverage and social media turned against the brand — a crisis that could have fixed a lasting bad reputation.
Instead of managing the story, Hakuhodo and Ozma PR gave it a sense of humour. The cut section became a detailed 'tail scar' that wept a tear. The severed tail was mounted in the claws of the crab restaurant's giant sign across the street, creating the story that the neighbour crab had cut it — human legal logic replaced by an absurd Osaka joke. A wall ad for a venerable knife brand played on the 'cut', and a one-week collaboration with Meat & Livestock Australia served 1,400 lamb-topped 'Golden Sheep Ramen' bowls during the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
The project turned a court defeat into nationwide entertainment: 65 TV programmes with over 153 minutes of coverage, 1,135 web media and 20 newspaper mentions, and more than 16,800 posts on X. Campaign awareness reached 56% in Kansai and 37% across Japan; brand awareness rose 3.9%, brand favorability rose 5.6 times, and 38% of people nationwide said they now wanted to visit the area around the shop.
The work won the Sōmushō Prize / ACC Grand Prix at the 2025 ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS, plus recognition at Japan's PR Awards, the Osaka Advertising Association Awards and Cannes Lions — and it remains a case study in turning a signboard's removal into a new reason to visit the street.
Why it lands
- It reframes a legal defeat as material for humour — the story the city tells about the sign becomes better than the original sign.
- It recruits neighbours as co-creators, so the campaign belongs to Dotonbori, not just to the brand.
- The executions are pure Osaka: absurd, self-deprecating, and consensus-building through laughter instead of argument.
- It converted a risk of lasting bad reputation into a 5.6x rise in brand favorability and nationwide attention.
What it did
The joke went national: 65 TV programmes with over 153 minutes of coverage, 1,135 web and 20 newspaper mentions, 16,800+ posts on X. Campaign awareness reached 56% in Kansai and 37% nationwide, brand awareness rose 3.9%, favorability rose 5.6x, and 38% of nationwide respondents said they now wanted to visit the area. It won the ACC 2025 Grand Prix.
What you can take
When a negative event is unavoidable, don't manage the story — own it and make it funny. A shared joke outlasts a legal defeat; turning the loss into folklore raised favorability more than a win.
Since then
The project won the ACC 2025 Grand Prix and recognition at Japan's PR Awards, the Osaka Advertising Association Awards and Cannes Lions. The tearful tail scar and the crab 'culprit' remain part of Dotonbori's signboard landscape, giving visitors a new photo spot and a story to retell. In Japanese PR education the episode became a reference case for crisis communication — 'losing the case, winning the story' — and a demonstration that a neighbourhood's shared joke can outlast a legal defeat.
