Dragon Quest Walk turns the daily commute into a JRPG
Square Enix and Colopl made the real city the Dragon Quest game world — 5M downloads in its first week and No.1 sales on both app stores.

What it had to solve
After Pokémon GO proved location play, Square Enix wanted a Dragon Quest hit for smartphones — but casual location games felt shallow next to a 35-year RPG brand.
How it works
The idea was born during the 2016 Pokémon GO boom: Square Enix producer Tadamasa Shiba asked Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii whether location-based play could be combined with the series into “something interesting.” At the June 3, 2019 announcement event, Horii recalled how Dragon Quest IX had once sent players outdoors with their Nintendo DS — “this time, take your smartphone and go adventuring in the streets.” The announcement itself moved markets: both Square Enix and co-developer Colopl saw their stocks jump, Colopl to a daily limit-up.
The design made the player's own town the game world. The GPS-linked screen spawns monsters and real landmarks on actual streets, with the series' turn-based combat and equipment gacha intact. A “WALK mode” automates battles and item collection while the phone is in a pocket or bag — a safety feature aimed squarely at Japan's walk-while-texting hazard. The game released September 12, 2019, with pre-registration open from September 5.
The launch was explosive for a Japan-only smartphone RPG: 3 million downloads by September 14, 5 million within the first week (announced September 19), and No.1 sales rankings on both the App Store and Google Play. The 5-million celebration ran a gift event with 1,500 premium gems and gacha for the gear of the original 1986 Dragon Quest hero. Pokémon GO had 1 billion downloads worldwide, but DQ Walk was out-selling it in Japan by reworking the formula for domestic rhythms.
Why it lands
- Play is layered onto an existing daily routine — the commute is already mandatory, so the game needs no extra attention budget; it turns dead time into game time.
- It kept Dragon Quest's own mechanics (turn-based battle, gacha, gear) instead of copying Pokémon GO's catch-and-release loop, so it reads as a real DQ title rather than a me-too.
- The WALK mode removed the genre's real blocker in Japan — using a phone while walking is socially unacceptable and dangerous — making outdoor play safe enough to become a habit.
- Announcing through a press event with the series creator turned the reveal into national news, and nostalgia plus pre-registration carried launch momentum.
What it did
5 million downloads within a week of the Sept 12, 2019 launch; No.1 sales ranking on both the App Store and Google Play; a 5M celebration event gave away 1,500 premium gems and gacha for the original 1986 Dragon Quest hero's equipment.
What you can take
When a platform shifts, rebuild the core loop around its physical constraint — DQ Walk won by designing turn-based battles and gacha into the commute itself, not pasting monsters on a map.
Since then
Dragon Quest Walk became a fixture of Japan's top-grossing mobile charts, kept alive with monthly story chapters, collaboration events and anniversary campaigns well into the 2020s. It stayed a Japan-only release — an early example of a game designed around one market's daily rhythms, where the commute rather than the couch is the play space.
