What it had to solve
A tiny studio of about a dozen people wanted to make a space exploration game at the scale of an actual galaxy, which is impossible with hand-built content — so Hello Games decided the computer would author the universe.
How it works
No Man's Sky promised what no studio of a dozen people could hand-build: a galaxy-sized space exploration game where every star, planet, creature and name is unique. Hello Games' answer was procedural generation — a deterministic algorithm that authors the universe on the fly from a seed, so the computer creates what an art team never could.
The system produces 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets, each with its own terrain, flora, fauna and resources. Because the generation is deterministic, every player's machine computes the same galaxy, and discoveries are shared: the first player to land on a planet can name it, and that name persists for everyone else. Hello Games told IGN before release that seeing all the planets would take about 585 billion years.
The game launched on August 9, 2016 to tens of thousands of negative Steam reviews over broken promises, but the creative core — discovery in a universe no designer ever saw — held. Hello Games kept shipping free updates, improving reviews over years and turning the game around; Sean Murray's GDC 2019 talk 'Grit' described it as one of the best-selling new IPs ever.
On the game's tenth anniversary in 2026, Murray reported that players had still explored less than 1% of the planets, and that the game had seen its highest player numbers since launch — the strongest proof that making the machine the author created content that outlasted any hand-built world.
