Nintendo Labo turns cardboard into Switch games — 1M Toy-Con kits in one quarter
Labo folds flat cardboard sheets into Toy-Con toys — piano, robot suit, fishing rod — that plug into Switch Joy-Cons; over a million kits sold by July 2018.

Nintendo wanted an 'interactive build-and-play experience' for the Switch aimed at children and families, priced like a toy rather than a console game — and built from hardware people already owned: the console, the Joy-Cons and their sensors.
How it works
In January 2018 Nintendo announced Labo: a line of DIY kits for the Switch built from corrugated cardboard. The pitch was an 'interactive build-and-play experience': flat sheets fold into Toy-Con creations — a 13-key piano, fishing rod, robot suit, motorbike, RC car — and when the Switch and its Joy-Cons snap into the build, the object comes alive on screen. Launching 20 April 2018, the Variety Kit cost $69.99 and the Robot Kit $79.99 — a toy price, not a console-game price.
The creative move was trusting the making, not just the playing. Labo's software works because the cardboard is the controller: the Joy-Con's IR camera reads the Toy-Con's motion, the gyroscope feels its tilt, HD rumble adds touch. Nintendo had spent decades selling finished worlds; Labo sold the assembly itself as the game, and the game as the reward for building.
It worked. Nintendo reported over one million Labo kits sold worldwide by July 2018 — its first quarter on sale — and Japan Game Awards 2019 gave Labo a Special Award, praising the way it used the Switch's sensors to create a new kind of play: the joy of making things yourself.
Labo never had to be a console-seller to matter. It showed that a platform's most distinctive feature can be an idea — cardboard priced like a toy, folded into hardware people already owned — and that a games company can market imagination itself.

Since then
Nintendo extended Labo with additional Toy-Con kits over the following year, including a VR Kit in 2019, and the series collected industry recognition including the Japan Game Awards 2019 Special Award. Labo stayed a beloved niche rather than a sales blockbuster, but it proved a first-party platform holder could sell cardboard at toy prices on the strength of an idea — a line of thinking Nintendo kept applying in later hardware experiments.
