Specsavers turns misheard Rick Astley lyrics into a mass hearing test — Cannes Grand Prix
Golin got Rick Astley to re-record 'Never Gonna Give You Up' with the wrong lyrics people mishear — 20M plays in 8 hours and a 1,220% booking lift above target.

当时的题目
Specsavers, known for vision, wanted to grow its audiology business — but people put off hearing tests for up to 10 years because hearing loss terrifies them. The category defaults to fear-based ads, and the brand's 'entertain and educate' strategy needed a conversation nobody could ignore.
它是怎么成立的
In late 2023, Rick Astley released a version of his 1987 hit 'Never Gonna Give You Up' that sounded almost right — except for the lyrics. 'You wouldn't catch nits from any other guy' instead of 'you wouldn't get this from any other guy', 'your aunt's been naked' instead of 'your heart's been aching'. Released with no explanation, it Rick-Rolled the nation: listeners shared their confusion on social media before the reveal landed — the point was that mishearing lyrics can be an early sign of hearing loss.
The campaign was Specsavers' attempt to grow its audiology business without the category's usual fear tactics. Golin, the PR agency, knew people avoid hearing tests for up to 10 years because hearing loss terrifies them, so it turned the most famous misheard song in internet culture into a 'mass hearing test you can't help but sing along to'. The follow-up radio spot played the wrong-lyrics version for 45 seconds before comedian Rob Brydon asked, 'Did that sound right to you?' and pointed listeners to free hearing tests.
The results made it one of the most awarded campaigns of 2024: 20 million organic plays in eight hours, hearing-loss searches up 138%, hearing the UK's number-one trending topic, and hearing-test bookings up 66% (1,220% above target, per the agency). It took six Cannes Lions including the PR Grand Prix — the first time a PR agency had ever won that category for a creative idea — and the UK's first Audio & Radio Grand Prix.
妙在哪
- Everyone knows the song, so the wrong lyrics are instantly noticeable — the audience performs its own hearing test while singing along.
- Releasing it without explanation turns confusion into earned conversation; the reveal is the campaign, not a paid placement.
- A beloved artist re-recording his own hit removes the fear and shame the category usually leans on.
- The radio extension repeats the trick in everyday life, so the joke keeps testing the nation's hearing on an ongoing basis.
做出来什么
The song was played 20 million times in its first eight hours, hearing-loss Google searches rose 138%, hearing became the UK's number-one trending topic, and the story reached 95% of major UK titles. Specsavers saw hearing-test bookings rise 66% (and a record 1,220% above target, per Golin). The work won six Cannes Lions in 2024 — including the PR Grand Prix, the first ever won by a PR agency for a creative idea, and the UK's first Audio & Radio Grand Prix — plus 29 awards in total.
可以借走的
When the product truth is scary — you may be losing your hearing — hide it inside a song everyone already loves; the moment listeners discover the joke is the moment they receive the message.
后来
The platform kept running: a radio extension with Rob Brydon, then 'The Misheard Manifesto' with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, who revealed his own hearing loss. In 2025 the campaign won a Gold Lion for Creative Effectiveness at Cannes, and Specsavers used it to reposition itself as a leader in hearing-health communication while hearing-aid sales grew year on year.
