当时的题目
In May 2017 Netflix's VP of product Todd Yellin pitched Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones on an interactive Black Mirror episode; they first refused, fearing a gimmick, until a story emerged that could only work as interactive: a 1984 programmer developing a choose-your-own-adventure game.
它是怎么成立的
On December 28, 2018, Netflix released Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, its first live-action interactive film: viewers steer the protagonist through branching choices on a ten-second timer, and if they do nothing a default path plays. The project took two years, and the pitch was initially refused — Brooker and Jones feared interactivity would be a gimmick until a story emerged that could only work that way.
Bandersnatch follows Stefan, a 1984 programmer building a choose-your-own-adventure game, which makes the format the subject as well as the mechanism. Netflix built new technology to make it work: state tracking remembers earlier choices and unlocks later paths, and device-memory work keeps branching scenes from buffering. Brooker's nonlinear script crashed ordinary tools, so Netflix developed an internal system, Branch Manager, to manage a story map of 250 video segments and millions of permutations.
The launch became a cultural event: fans decoded narrative branches, mapped endings and hunted Easter eggs within hours, and critics argued about whether the choices were meaningful. The Verge framed the format as a strategic Trojan horse — interactive content is harder to pirate, drives engagement, and feeds Netflix's data machine. Bandersnatch won the 2019 Emmys for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media.
妙在哪
- Interactivity was the meaning, not the decoration: a story about free will and the illusion of control demands that the viewer make choices
- Netflix built the missing plumbing — state tracking, Branch Manager and seamless branching playback — so the format worked at streaming scale in 28 languages
- It turned passive viewing into an active, shareable puzzle, generating decoder fandom and press attention without traditional marketing
- It moved interactive drama from children's animation to prestige adult television, giving Netflix a format competitors did not have
做出来什么
Released December 28, 2018, Bandersnatch became a cultural event: fans decoded branches and hunted Easter eggs within hours, and critics debated whether the choices were meaningful. It was Netflix's first big success with interactivity, and won the 2019 Emmys for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media.
可以借走的
A gimmick becomes a format when the mechanism is the meaning: branching worked because free will and the illusion of choice were the story, so interactivity carried the drama instead of decorating it.
后来
Netflix kept the interactive pipeline: The Hollywood Reporter said Branch Manager and the new technology would serve future projects, with talks already under way with other creators. The double Emmy win made Bandersnatch the first interactive program to take major television awards. The Verge argued the data-rich format could become a strategic weapon as Netflix's stock fell 37 percent from its July 2018 peak and Disney+ loomed. It became shorthand for the format debate: does viewer control deepen drama or reduce it to data collection?
