Weichuan Daily C's 'spelling bottle' turns winter juice packs into a word game

Weichuan Daily C's 2016 'spelling bottles': 42 packs, one character each, letting shoppers spell sentences — 40% monthly sales growth, 3M new consumers.

The ideaOne character per bottle, 42 bottles total: shoppers spell out sentences with the packs — the package becomes a game that sells winter juice.substantial

What it had to solve

Weichuan Daily C, a chilled juice brand in China, hit its first negative growth in 2014 and read as dated; it re-targeted 20–30-year-old white-collar workers and adopted 'package as media.' In winter, chilled juice sales slumped, and the slogan 'you need immunity' ran into advertising rules — so agency VK35 suggested splitting the message into characters.

How it works

In 2014 Weichuan Daily C, a chilled juice brand in China, recorded its first negative growth and was perceived as an aging label. The brand team retargeted 20–30-year-old white-collar workers and, with a limited media budget, adopted the principle 'package as media': the bottle label itself would carry the message. That principle led to a series of packaging campaigns — reason bottles, Hi bottles and a 'line bottles' tie-in with the TV drama Love O2O that increased sales by 90% year on year.

Winter then created a new problem: chilled juice is a category that slumps seasonally. Weichuan's first idea, a slogan about the need for immunity, violated advertising regulations, so agency VK35 proposed splitting the phrase into individual characters. The result was the 'spelling bottle': 42 bottles (7 flavors × 6 characters), chosen so about one-third could form immunity phrases like 'Don't catch a cold' and two-thirds care phrases like 'Warm me'. Supermarkets arranged the packs in fridges to spell sentences, and QR codes led to H5 games and KOL posts.

The bottles were immediately repurposed by consumers; 'You are lustful. Don't hug me.' became a meme, and a Weibo post joking 'You catch a cold every day' drew more than 13,000 likes. Results followed: monthly sales grew 40% year on year through 2016, the new packaging added 3 million new consumers within three months and increased sales by 60%, and the brand led China's 100% pure-juice category by market share from July to October. The campaign became the reference point for China's 'bottle marketing' wave, and Weichuan continued to iterate the format for years.

Why it lands

  • Packaging as media: the ad budget went into the product itself, so distribution doubled as reach.
  • Single characters made participation effortless — spelling and photographing needed no skill or app.
  • The ambiguity let consumers write their own copy, caring or naughty, generating infinite variations for free.
  • Winter framing gave the game a purpose: a reason to drink juice in the cold season without lecturing.
  • A 21-day shelf life and fast retail rotation let the campaign roll out and refresh quickly.

What it did

Consumers photographed and combined bottles into sentences; 'You are lustful. Don't hug me.' went viral, and a Weibo joke reading 'You catch a cold every day' drew over 13,000 likes. Results followed: Daily C's monthly sales grew 40% year on year through 2016, the new packaging added 3 million new consumers within three months, sales grew 60%, and the brand held the No.1 share of China's 100% pure-juice category from July to October.

What you can take

When the product itself is the media, the consumer finishes the ad: single characters turned a bottle into a letter, so buying more packs became the game — the fridge became the billboard.

Since then

The spelling bottle ran until the end of February 2017 and became the reference point for China's 'bottle marketing' wave, which Coca-Cola's nickname bottles had started and Weichuan turned into a recurring format. The brand kept iterating — scale bottles, 'daily yi' bottles and prompt bottles — and even sold custom bottle copy to partners, running a 'Together in Red' campaign for China Merchants Bank's 30th anniversary while declining Mercedes. Industry retrospectives credit the packaging series with reviving Daily C's sales curve and making it the leader of China's pure-juice category.
