Filsa turns the bottle cap into a water filter — wins El Ojo 2024 Innovation Grand Prix

What it had to solve

Around 3.7–4 million Colombians, especially desert communities like the Wayuu in La Guajira, lacked safe drinking water while a severe drought pushed reservoirs to historic lows. Conventional purifiers were too expensive and complex for remote areas; Filsa, a water-filter company, needed a tool that worked where infrastructure did not.

How it works

In 2024, Colombian water-filter company Filsa, Ogilvy Colombia, Baylor International and the Colombian Red Cross released Filter Caps: a 3D-printed bottle cap that turns an ordinary plastic bottle into a portable water treatment plant. The cap fits any standard PCO 28mm thread and links two bottles, purifying water as it flows from one to the other.

The problem was stark: an estimated 3.7–4 million Colombians lacked access to safe drinking water, concentrated in desert regions such as La Guajira where drought made the situation worse. Household purifiers were too expensive or too complicated, so the team attacked the obstacle itself, making a functioning filter the size of a cap.

Inside the cap, layers of metals, minerals and natural substrates retain bacteria and impurities, reducing them by 70%, eliminating 90% of heavy metals, and adding minerals, alkalinity and hydrogen. The corn-starch resin casing is compostable, the whole device weighs 28 grams, and it promotes reusing plastic bottles rather than discarding them.

The thousand caps distributed with humanitarian partners carry the capacity to produce more than 720,000 liters of safe water a year, and early units reclaimed over 300,000 liters in two months. The idea then swept the award circuit, from two Gold Lions at Cannes to El Ojo's Innovation Grand Prix.

The project was positioned as a template for disaster relief and remote communities beyond Colombia, with the design open to scaling to any region facing the same water problem.
