Mountain Dew turns every game sound into the word 'DEW' — ADFEST 2026 Digital Gold

BBDO Guerrero rebuilds game audio from voice recordings of 'DEW' — 63M+ views, Cannes Bronze, LIA Gold, ADFEST 2026 Digital Craft Gold.

The ideaTurn the brand into the medium's own sound: replace every game sound effect — gunfire, helicopters, UI blips — with voice recordings of the word 'DEW'.substantial

What it had to solve

Mountain Dew was already positioned as the Philippines' 'official game fuel,' but wanted any game experience to feel incomplete without the brand. The insight: Filipinos mute their phones while gaming in public and vocalize their own sound effects — and the most common vocalization is 'DEW.'

How it works

In the Philippines, Mountain Dew had spent years building its position as the country's 'official game fuel,' but its association still rested on sponsorships and promotions. BBDO Guerrero found a behavioral truth instead: Filipinos play mobile games in public with the sound muted, and when a match gets intense they voice their own sound effects. The most common sound gamers vocalize is the brand's own nickname — 'DEW.'

The campaign, called Play the Dew, replaced every game sound effect with voice recordings of the word 'DEW.' Working with Tokyo sound house Syn Music, BBDO Guerrero built radio spots and stock-footage gameplay films — a first-person shooter's final round, a fighting game's UI — in which gunfire, helicopter rotors, explosions and menu blips are all human voices saying 'DEW.' The idea later expanded across social and gaming platforms, inviting gamers to make their own content.

Results were outsized for an audio-only idea: the gameplay films logged 63M+ views in a country with just 43M gamers, positive brand sentiment rose 60% versus the prior month, and the TikTok activation pulled 20M+ impressions in two weeks. 'Dew Battle' won Mountain Dew Philippines' first Cannes Lions — a 2024 Audio & Radio Bronze Lion — plus a 2024 LIA Gold in sound design, and the campaign collected ADFEST 2026's Digital Craft Gold.

Why it lands

  • The insight was observable behavior, not a claim: gamers already say 'DEW' out loud, so the brand amplified a habit players had invented themselves.
  • Replacing the medium's own audio made the brand the experience — every second of play quietly repeated the name.
  • One word and one rule kept execution cheap and consistent across radio, film and social.
  • The platform-native TikTok extension handed the idea to gamers, turning advertising into user-generated play.

What it did

The gameplay films drew 63M+ views in a country with only 43M gamers; positive brand sentiment rose 60% versus the month before launch; the TikTok activation earned 20M+ impressions in two weeks. 'Dew Battle' won a Cannes 2024 Audio & Radio Bronze Lion — Mountain Dew Philippines' first — plus a 2024 LIA Gold, and the campaign took ADFEST 2026 Digital Craft Gold.

What you can take

Replace a medium's native sound with one repeated word: when every game effect is voiced as 'DEW,' the brand becomes the experience itself — no claims needed, just repetition.

Since then

The idea kept paying off beyond launch: it was shortlisted at D&AD and Gerety, and in 2026 Mountain Dew expanded the audio concept into 'Play No Dew,' a physical stunt that removed the D, E and W keys — the letters of 'DEW' — from creators' keyboards and staged a live match where amateurs on full keyboards beat a pro Valorant squad missing the keys. The streams generated more than 44.3 million views in two weeks. A single audio insight scaled from radio spots into a national gaming-culture moment.
