Vuokkoset's Tampon for Men makes period care gender-neutral — Eurobest 2024 PR Grand Prix

Finnish brand Vuokkoset sells a tampon packed 'FOR MEN' that wraps into 'FOR MENSTRUATION', then de-genders its whole line — news in 89 countries.

The ideaUse the product itself as the message: a tampon box lettered 'FOR MEN' that completes into 'FOR MENSTRUATION' around the pack — periods are not a gender issue.substantial

What it had to solve

Vuokkoset, a Finnish menstrual-care brand made by Delipap, saw its whole category sold as 'feminine hygiene' even though trans men, non-binary and intersex people also menstruate, and that gendered aisles deepen their distress. It wanted to spark that conversation during Transgender Awareness Week.

How it works

Vuokkoset, the Finnish period brand made by Delipap, started from an uncomfortable fact about its own category: menstrual products were designed, packaged and shelved as 'feminine hygiene', although trans men, non-binary and intersex people also menstruate. During international Transgender Awareness Week (13–19 November 2023) it launched Tampon for Men to make that visible.

The creative device was the packaging itself: a navy box reads FOR MEN on the front and the lettering wraps around the pack to complete FOR MENSTRUATION — the product's very name makes the point. TBWA\Helsinki built the campaign around DEI consultant and trans man Dakota Robin, who fronted it and answered the debate it provoked.

The launch became a global news story, covered in 89 countries. Trans communities and allies largely welcomed it while some feminist critics called it an insult to women. Vuokkoset responded to the feedback with a product decision: in March 2024 it announced, and in June 2024 shipped, a fully gender-neutral 'For Menstruation' family of tampons, pads and underwear liners across Finnish retail.

'Tampon FOR MENstruation' won the 2024 Eurobest Grand Prix in PR — a small national brand using a product and its packaging, rather than a media buy, to change who period care is for.

Why it lands

  • The idea lives in the object: reading FOR MEN → FOR MENSTRUATION around one box delivers the argument without a line of ad copy.
  • A niche social issue became a global story, with coverage in 89 countries.
  • It treated the trans community's feedback as a product roadmap — pads and liners were added because users asked for them.
  • It converted a one-off stunt into a durable decision: gender-neutral naming became the permanent line, not a temporary pack.

What it did

The launch was reported in news outlets in 89 countries, triggering both praise and backlash; the gender-neutral range then shipped across Finnish retail. 'Tampon FOR MENstruation' by TBWA\Helsinki won the Eurobest 2024 Grand Prix in PR.

What you can take

A provocative product can carry the argument itself: instead of an ad explaining that periods are not women-only, Vuokkoset let the packaging say it — and the resulting global debate did the reaching.

Since then

The limited-edition Tampon for Men turned Vuokkoset into an international talking point and drew criticism from conservative and some feminist commentators, while trans communities largely responded with gratitude for being seen. Rather than retreat, Delipap made the stance permanent: the full range became the gender-neutral For Menstruation family in June 2024, and the work collected the Eurobest 2024 Grand Prix in PR, giving the brand's inclusivity claim lasting proof.
