THE FIRST TAKE: one mic, one take — Sony's white-room music channel goes global

What it had to solve

In 2019 Japan's music market still ran on TV appearances and CD sales, leaving artists without a digital stage that felt intimate or global. Sony Music Japan and TBWA\Hakuhodo's in-house content lab DISCO set out to build a music format you could not see on TV.

How it works

In November 2019, Sony Music Entertainment Japan and TBWA\Hakuhodo's content lab DISCO launched a YouTube channel called THE FIRST TAKE. The concept is deliberately minimal: a white studio, a single microphone, and one unedited performance of a song. Whatever the artist sings — nerves, breath, mistakes included — is what the viewer gets.

The team, inspired by NPR's Tiny Desk series and Germany's Colors, shot from the side so the viewer feels like they are in the studio watching an artist at work. Producer Makoto Uchida said the goal was 'something you couldn't see on TV, or more detailed than what you would see on a weekly music show'. Channel director Naoko Furukawa said the hardest early battle was convincing artists that there would be no retakes.

The channel found its audience fast: LiSA's one-take version of the Demon Slayer opening 'Gurenge' became the first viral hit, and pandemic-era uploads surged. Billboard reported the channel surpassed 7 million subscribers by late 2022, that artists like YOASOBI, Yuuri and DISH// went from newcomers to Billboard Japan Hot 100 toppers with videos past 100 million views, and that the project helped shift Japan's notoriously physical-first music market toward streaming.

The format kept expanding: Stray Kids was the first non-Japanese act, Harry Styles and Avril Lavigne followed, and the project grew a news site, podcasts and live concerts. In February 2024 it became the fastest Japanese music channel to reach 9 million subscribers, then passed 10 million by August — with 297 artists, 549 songs and about 4.7 billion views. The idea also swept awards: ADFEST 2022 Branded Entertainment Lotus Grande and Effective Lotus Silver, and Spikes Asia 2021 Silver and Bronze.

Why it lands

  • The one-take rule turned a limitation into the product: authenticity became the format, and there was no competing production value to beat.
  • It was a new stage, not a new ad: artists came to perform, fans came to watch, and the brand grew through the performances themselves.
  • The format travelled — one sentence explains it in any language, which is why global artists and overseas fans could join without a campaign.
  • Data-driven casting (seasonal songs, subtitle-first global outreach) kept the content culturally resonant instead of relying on paid promotion.

What it did

By late 2022 the channel had over 7 million subscribers and Billboard credited it with breaking new artists — YOASOBI, Yuuri and DISH// all topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 with videos passing 100 million views — and nudging Japan's physical-first market toward streaming. It won the ADFEST 2022 Branded Entertainment Lotus Grande plus Effective Lotus Silver, took Silver and Bronze at Spikes Asia 2021, and passed 10 million subscribers by August 2024 — the fastest a Japanese music channel had reached 9 million — with about 4.7 billion total views from 200+ countries.

What you can take

A constraint can be the whole concept: the one-take rule made authenticity the product, and a format explainable in one sentence became a franchise everyone wanted to join.

Since then

THE FIRST TAKE became a permanent fixture of Japanese music culture and a proven export format: it passed 10 million subscribers in August 2024, spawned spinoffs such as FLASH THE FIRST TAKE and REAL TIME THE FIRST TAKE, and its parent project added THE FIRST TIMES news media and live events. Its award haul — ADFEST 2022 Grande, Spikes Asia 2021 Silvers and Bronze — made it a canonical case of an agency inventing a media property rather than a campaign.
