DAIKI Angel Help's dementia-waitstaff restaurant wins ACC 2019 Grand Prix
A pop-up Tokyo restaurant where every waiter has dementia turns wrong orders into charm, reframing dementia as tolerable — ACC 2019 Grand Prix.

What it had to solve
DAIKI Angel Help, a dementia-care provider, wanted society to stop writing off people with dementia. The idea of a restaurant staffed by people with dementia came from a director at NHK; Hakuhodo's Satoshi Chikayama and Yuki Tokuno turned it into a real event, knowing it could be read as mockery if handled wrong.
How it works
The Restaurant of Mistaken Orders is an event-style restaurant in which all front-of-house staff have dementia — meaning there is a real chance the dish you get is not the one you ordered. The concept originated with a director at national broadcaster NHK and was taken on by Hakuhodo creative director Satoshi Chikayama, who brought in art director Yuki Tokuno; it opened in Tokyo in 2017 for dementia-care provider DAIKI Angel Help.
The creative bet was to make the mistake charming rather than embarrassing. Tokuno designed a tongue-out logo — the Japanese equivalent of biting one's lip in embarrassment — as an apology in advance, repeated across plates, hand wipes and staff aprons, and the event was built as a proper fine-dining restaurant with professional chefs and restaurant producers, so guests came for the food and stayed for the tolerance.
The work collected the Grand Prix for Marketing Effectiveness at the 59th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS in 2019, a Cannes Lions Silver in Design, Spikes Asia Golds in Design and PR, an ADFEST 2020 Gold in Brand Experience, and more at D&AD, LIA and New York Festivals. Hakuhodo reported that similar projects were being undertaken by people whose intentions it resonated with, spreading far beyond Japan.
The deeper move was changing what audiences felt: instead of asking people to be kind to dementia, the restaurant made tolerance itself the entertainment. One woman with dementia told Tokuno she hated making mistakes herself, but if there were a place where mistakes were overlooked with a chuckle, she would like to try working again — the entire bet of the project in one sentence.
Why it lands
- It inverted the problem: the symptom of dementia — mistakes — became the product's point, so there was nothing to hide or apologize for.
- Design did the emotional work: the tongue-out logo apologized in advance, making customers forgiving and even hopeful for a mistake.
- It was a real restaurant, not a stunt: professional chefs and service made it worth visiting on merit, so the message traveled with the experience.
- It gave people with dementia paid, meaningful social roles, and its shape was co-informed by what the participants themselves said they wanted.
- Winning awards was explicitly a strategy to be copied, and copies appeared in other countries within two years.
What it did
Won the 2019 ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS Grand Prix for Marketing Effectiveness, a Cannes Lions Silver in Design, Spikes Asia Golds in Design and PR, and an ADFEST 2020 Gold in Brand Experience; by 2019 the concept had spread to similar projects in other countries.
What you can take
Make the stigma's worst symptom the joke: inviting customers to laugh with the waitstaff turned tolerance from a moral demand into fun — design can reframe a social problem without lecturing.
Since then
After its 2017 debut the restaurant continued as a recurring event, and by 2019 Hakuhodo's own interview with Tokuno noted that similar projects were being undertaken by people whose intentions it resonated with, spreading far and wide. The campaign's award trail ran from 2019 into 2020 — ACC Grand Prix, Cannes Silver, Spikes Asia Golds, ADFEST Gold, D&AD Bronze, LIA Silver, New York Festivals Gold — and Hakuhodo framed it as a seed: the model could change society for the better, which they stated as the ultimate goal.
