What it had to solve
A 40-year-old trusted family builder was building to high-net-worth standards but wasn't perceived as luxury, and needed separating from Runwal Enterprises.
The idea
Valuable things are framed: the old logo's rectangle became an art-gallery frame, and the whole brand borrowed gallery language to say luxury.
How it works
Landor kept the Runwal 'R' in a refined gold finish, rebuilt the identity around gallery-style layouts, typography and photography, and anchored it in the idea 'For Generations to Come'.
What it did
Runwal says business doubled in the year since the rebrand, widening from residences and retail into hotels, schools and offices (self-reported).
Background
Runwal Realty, the Mumbai developer founded in 1978 with more than 35 completed projects including R City Mall, entered a new phase: its developments across Mumbai, Thane and Pune were being built to high-net-worth standards, but, as managing director Sandeep Runwal put it, 'the market still did not place us in. We needed to be recognized as a luxury brand.' The company had also been remaking itself from Runwal Group into Runwal Realty since 2016, and needed a distinct identity from the separate Runwal Enterprises.
Landor started from the brand's equity — generations of families buying their first homes from Runwal and returning years later — and turned it into the idea 'For Generations to Come'. The visual move came from a rectangle in the old logo, reframed with a simple thought: valuable things are framed. The identity borrows art-gallery layouts, typography and photography, and the familiar 'R' returns in a refined, gold-toned finish.
A year in, Runwal reports the business has doubled and is widening from residences and retail into hotels, schools and offices. 'The branding reflects that expanse, and feels true to luxury', Runwal said, adding that decisions got faster because the platform made clear what Runwal Realty stands for. Landor APAC president Lulu Raghavan called it premiumizing the brand for its next phase of growth.
Why it lands
Build quality had moved upmarket while brand perception stayed in family-value territory.
Trust was the core equity, so the luxury move kept the Runwal name and its 'R' recognizable.
A fixed 'Runwal Realty' name and simpler architecture separated it from the independent Runwal Enterprises.
The gallery-frame metaphor gave brochures, signage and sales collateral one rule to follow.
What you can take
Luxury positioning can come from a metaphor you already own — the frame in your old logo — rather than a new symbol.
Since then
The premium and luxury portfolio — Runwal One (Thane), Runwal Malabar (South Mumbai), Runwal Auris (Malad) and Runwal Raaya (Worli) — now markets under the new system. Growth figures are the company's own; Landor says the idea anchors corporate and project communications alike.
