What it had to solve
Women's Day advertising in China had defaulted to praising beauty or pushing promotions, while '女性化' was casually used as an insult and rigid expectations of masculinity constrained men too. Proya wanted the holiday to mean something beyond consumption — and to give its 'double resistance' serum a social meaning.
The idea
Answer Women's Day with an argument, not a discount: a full-page manifesto and a rap film naming everyday sexist labels — 'gender is not the boundary, prejudice is'.
How it works
On 3 March 2021 the manifesto ran as the full back cover of China Women's News; on Women's Day, a film voiced by rapper 于贞 (W8VES) asked when people judge by gender and listed everyday sexist remarks before landing the line '性别不是边界线,偏见才是'. A 'double resistance' art gift box added an attitude T-shirt whose blank page invited KOLs to draw their stance.
What it did
The hashtag hit Weibo's hot search on Women's Day and passed 100 million reads; the official film logged over 10 million views and 28,000+ reposts, and the campaign spread across WeChat and Douyin. SocialBeta later named it one of the first half of 2021's top ten women's marketing cases, and sociologist 李银河 joined the discussion the campaign opened.
Background
Proya's Women's Day campaign began with an observation: in China, '女性化' ('feminine') was used as an insult, '男子气概' ('masculinity') was a cage, and holiday advertising mostly told women how to look. On 3 March 2021, the skincare brand ran the full text of its manifesto — 'gender is not the boundary, prejudice is' — as the entire back cover of China Women's News, a state newspaper, giving the argument institutional weight before the film even appeared.
On Women's Day itself, a film voiced by rapper 于贞, known for the song 《她和她和她》, asked 'when do you judge things by gender?' and named everyday sexist labels — women are weak, men cannot cry — before landing the slogan '性别不是边界线,偏见才是'. The campaign closed the loop to product with a 'double resistance' gift box: the serum's antioxidant and anti-glycation claim (双抗) became a shared stance, and a blank-page T-shirt invited KOLs to draw their own attitude.
The topic reached Weibo's hot search on the day and passed 100 million reads; the official film logged over 10 million views and more than 28,000 reposts, and both film and topic spread across WeChat and Douyin. Sociologist 李银河 joined the discussion, and SocialBeta later placed the campaign among the first half of 2021's top ten women's marketing cases. A beauty brand that usually competed on formulas had become the voice of a social argument — and the argument sold the product.
Why it lands
It flipped the category's default: instead of celebrating how women look, it named how people are judged, giving both men and women a stake.
The pairing of a state newspaper's back cover with a rap film bridged institutional authority and youth culture in one message.
The 'double resistance' pun tied the product claim to a social stance, so the campaign's idea was literally the product.
A short, quotable slogan — 'gender is not the boundary, prejudice is' — gave Weibo users the exact text to repeat, which is what made it a topic rather than an ad.
What you can take
A holiday campaign works when it changes what people argue about, not what they buy: name the prejudice instead of the product, and the slogan becomes the product.
Since then
The campaign became the reference point for the 2021 Women's Day wave and stayed in discussion for months: SocialBeta's mid-year roundup placed it among the first half of the year's ten most notable women's marketing cases, and the slogan became shorthand in Chinese brand commentary for a purpose-led holiday play. Later Women's Day campaigns in the category were discussed against it, and 'gender is not the boundary' remained the line the campaign was remembered by — a holiday ad that outlived the holiday.
