Head & Shoulders rents out shoulders to make its name a real gesture
A deadpan mockumentary about renting a clean shoulder makes the brand name literal — viewers asked if it was real, then strangers began lending shoulders.
Head & Shoulders (海飞丝)
What it had to solve
Head & Shoulders spent decades in China as the functional dandruff expert, with no real emotional bond to consumers, at a time when people felt closer online but more distant in person. The brand's question was how an anti-dandruff product could help bring people physically closer.
How it works
Head & Shoulders had spent more than three decades in China as the category's dandruff expert and market leader, yet it had no emotional connection with consumers. Meanwhile people felt increasingly close online and increasingly distant in real life — so the brand asked how an anti-dandruff shampoo could help bring people back together.
Yilife's answer was hiding in the name all along. 'Head & Shoulders' originally meant a clean head and clean shoulders — and in Chinese culture, resting a head on a shoulder is a small gesture of intimacy that has to be dandruff-free. So the agency invented 'shoulder rental', a mockumentary about a man who lends strangers a clean, warm shoulder to lean on.
The fiction felt real enough that viewers asked where they could book the service. Head & Shoulders opened a playful 'Head & Shoulders Company' account on Xiaohongshu, recruited real 'shoulder ambassadors', and the film hit Bilibili's trending list within a week. Influencers started offering their own shoulders to strangers on the street, and in January 2025 the brand hosted its first in-person gathering of shoulder ambassadors in Shanghai.
The campaign gave the brand a durable emotional platform rather than a one-off stunt: the head-on-shoulder symbol could be extended to Chinese New Year reunions, Valentine's Day and every future product moment. It took a Gold in integrated marketing at the 2025 DAwards, and the brand declared its mission 'a clean shoulder for everyone to lean on'.
Why it lands
- The insight came from the brand's own name, so the emotional meaning could never be copied by a competitor's ad.
- A fake occupation in documentary form let the audience suspend disbelief long enough to feel the need, then ask if it was real.
- Dandruff was reframed as the enemy of a tender moment, linking product function to emotion instead of replacing function with emotion.
- The head-on-shoulder symbol was repeatable across seasons and products, so the campaign built a platform rather than a one-off film.
What it did
The film reached Bilibili's trending list within a week, and viewers asked whether the rental service actually existed. Influencers offered shoulders to strangers on the street, and in January 2025 Head & Shoulders held its first in-person 'Shoulder Ambassador' gathering in Shanghai. The integrated platform work took a Gold at the 2025 DAwards.
What you can take
When a category is purely functional, mine the brand name itself: an emotional insight hidden in plain language can give every future campaign a standing platform.
Since then
Shoulder Rental kept evolving after the film: viewers treated the fictional job as real, KOLs lent shoulders to strangers, and on 17 January 2025 Head & Shoulders held its first 'Shoulder Ambassador meet-up' in Shanghai with ambassadors, Watsons members and the creative team. The platform won a Gold in integrated marketing at the 2025 DAwards and was archived as an entry at the LongXi Creative Awards, and the brand said it would keep building the head-and-shoulders world in the years ahead.
