Philipstown's wire-car Grand Prix: a Karoo town's toy cars become a global brand
Accenture Song turns wire cars from an obscure South African town into 'The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix' — a purpose brand that swept the 2026 Bookmarks.

What it had to solve
Philipstown is a small South African town whose children build racing cars from wire — homemade invention no one outside knew about. Accenture Song's task was to give the craft an audience, a future and a way to fund itself.
How it works
In the small South African town of Philipstown, children have long built racing cars from wire — a homemade motorsport culture unknown outside the town. It was the kind of craft that usually stays local forever: no brand, no audience, no money in it.
Accenture Song's answer was to treat it as heritage rather than hobby. With the town's own Philipstown WireCar Foundation, the agency created 'The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix' — a full digital brand built around the town's races, expanded into a documentary film and a video game, with an integrated campaign across online video, interactive design and craft.
The build was recognized quickly. At the 2026 IAB South Africa Bookmark Awards, the Foundation was named Digital Brand of the Year, and the Grand Prix was the most-decorated campaign of the night — winning the Pixel for Purpose black pixel, a shared Best Marketer honour, gold in Games and Digital Campaign Strategy, and golds across Online Video, Interactive Design and Excellence in Craft. Best Digital Agency was shared between Accenture Song and Ogilvy.
The work also reached the Cannes Lions 2026 Sustainable Development Goals shortlist, recognized across Poverty and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure — with the jury noting how the idea connected community, entertainment, local innovation and social dignity. A town's wire cars had become a purpose brand with a global audience.
Why it lands
- Naming an unofficial craft a 'Grand Prix' applies the grammar of Formula One to a town's playground, instantly upgrading its status without changing what it is.
- A foundation gave the craft an owner and a continuing reason to exist, so celebration could fund continuation.
- Expanding one race into a documentary, a video game and an online brand let a local story travel as product, not just press.
- Because the audience was the whole world, recognition followed the work — purpose pixels and global shortlists came with the brand, not in place of it.
What it did
At South Africa's 2026 IAB Bookmark Awards the Foundation was Digital Brand of the Year and the Grand Prix the most-decorated campaign — Pixel for Purpose, Best Marketer, golds in Games, strategy, online video and craft; it also made a Cannes Lions 2026 Sustainable Development Goals shortlist.
What you can take
Give a local craft an official, world-class form and it stops being a curiosity: a Grand Prix brand, a foundation and a game made a town's wire cars a story the industry celebrated.
Since then
The award run kept building through 2026: the Cannes Lions 2026 Sustainable Development Goals shortlist joined the Bookmarks sweep, and the Grand Prix — including its video game — became the reference example in South African discussions of purpose-led digital work. The Foundation's own marketers shared the Best Marketer black pixel, and the town's races continued as an annual event with a growing audience that now follows wire cars built by hand in a Karoo town.
