Nazionale turns amaro and limoncello into foosball-player bottles — ADC Best of Packaging
Auge Design bottles amaro and limoncello as stylized foosball players — red vs blue, cap as ball, label as body — bottling Italian bar ritual as premium design.

What it had to solve
Alfonso Califano, bartender and co-founder of the high-end bar Cinquanta, approached Auge Design wanting to relaunch two Italian classics — amaro and limoncello — as a premium, contemporary brand rather than folkloric kitsch.
How it works
Nazionale Spirito Italiano began with a bartender's ambition. Alfonso Califano, co-founder of the internationally ranked bar Cinquanta, asked Florence design studio Auge Design to reinterpret amaro and limoncello as premium, contemporary spirits. Instead of heritage clichés, the team anchored the brand in the foosball table — the social heart of the traditional Italian bar — and let the bottles become players in that game.
The execution turns one metaphor into a complete system: the bottle silhouette is a stylized foosball figure, red for Amaro Nazionale and blue for Limoncello Nazionale; the custom spherical cap acts as the ball and player head; the shaped front label forms the body; a die-cut emblem recalls the plaques on real foosball players; the circular back label reads as the ball; and Fasson cotton label paper, printed and finished by Modulgraf, gives the pack a raw, tactile craft feel.
The concept traveled from barroom joke to award podium. At ADC's 104th Annual Awards the range took Best of Packaging Design, it won a Pentawards Gold in Spirits Collection (Mixed) 2025, and Dieline named it Best of Beverage — proof that a playful, culturally specific idea could still read as luxury on the shelf and in high-end mixology.
Why it lands
- It dramatized the drinking culture itself: foosball is where Italians gather, so the identity carried a social story before a single word of copy was written.
- One metaphor ran through every element — cap as ball, body as player, back label as ball — turning a joke into a coherent, repeatable design system.
- Red-versus-blue player colors mapped cleanly onto the two liquids, making the range instantly readable on shelf.
- Tactile materials and precise finishing kept the playful concept premium, proving humor doesn't have to cost sophistication.
What it did
The range took Best of Packaging Design at ADC's 104th Annual Awards, a Pentawards Gold for Spirits Collection (Mixed) 2025 and Dieline's Best of Beverage, turning a bar-sport conceit into one of the most decorated spirits identities of the year.
What you can take
Borrow the ritual around a product, not its clichés: foosball gave these spirits a shared cultural stage, letting playfulness and craft coexist in a premium identity.
Since then
Recognition came quickly and internationally: ADC's Best of Packaging Design at the 104th Annual Awards in New York, a Pentawards Gold in 2025, and Dieline's Best of Beverage. The project became a reference example of heritage rebranding in spirits, later featured by label-materials supplier Avery Dennison as a case study in turning a cultural object into packaging, and it continued to collect design honors, including recognition in D&AD's annual, while the brand sat in the premium bars its concept was built around.
