What it had to solve
Kohler designers noticed that when shower space is tight, users bolt on separate shelves and caddies — adding storage but also visual overload and clutter. The Parallel project, led by Kohler Global Design China, started from the opposite direction: combine the shower system and the shelf into a single architectural element, defined by structure, proportions and clarity, so a confined shower gains order rather than extra fixtures.
How it works
Kohler's designers began Parallel with an everyday observation: when shower space is limited, people install separate shelves to create storage — and the price is visual overload in an already cramped room. Their answer was not a better shelf but a different category of object: instead of treating storage as an addition, the team combined the shower system and the shelf into a single architectural element, designed as a piece of bathroom furniture defined by structure, proportions and clarity.
The execution is a folded-aluminium column with a rectangular cross-section. A shelf-like surface stores soap and accessories and quietly houses the controls beneath it — a rotary knob for temperature sits at an angle, with flush square buttons of uncoloured recycled ABS for functions. Optional modules attach to one side: a colour-changing light and a Lego-compatible panel for hooks, dishes or personal items. Underneath, WaterMind puts a pressure sensor in each self-cleaning silicone nozzle, so the system adjusts water pressure automatically to keep an optimal spray while using less water.
The jury gave the system the highest distinction of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026, 'Red Dot: Best of the Best', saying Kohler had combined balanced aesthetics and architectural clarity with a first-class user experience. The honour was one of 24 Red Dot awards the company collected in 2026, and the designers point to the folded aluminium as proof the product could be both more sustainable — 30 percent less plastic — and more durable, with the whole system built to bring order and calm to daily showering.

Media coverage in China framed the award as validation of local design research and of treating the shower as part of the living space rather than as plumbing. The designers describe Parallel as bathroom furniture whose folded aluminium construction, self-cleaning nozzles and modular side panel point toward a bathroom where fewer, better-designed objects do more.
