Casa Marrazzo 1934's illustrated glass jars win Pentawards 2023 Diamond Best of Show

Italian sauce maker Casa Marrazzo wanted a custom premium jar line that would express its nostalgic, homely heritage and stand out on shelf without looking mass-market.

Screen-print minimalist white illustrations of household objects directly on the glass, so the sauce inside supplies the color and completes each picture.

Auge Design drew dozens of simple white geometric illustrations of household items, screen-printed them on the glass so the product's own color fills them in, and topped each jar with a colored hot-stamped cap label.

Won the 2023 Pentawards Diamond (Best of Show), the single top prize among 2,000+ entries from 70+ countries; Auge Design was also named Design Agency of the Year.

Casa Marrazzo, an Italian preserve maker with a nostalgic brand identity, asked Auge Design to create a custom line of premium jars. The brief was to feel homely and high-quality at once, on a crowded sauce shelf.

Auge Design's answer was to print dozens of minimalist white illustrations of household objects directly onto the glass by screen printing. The illustrations are drawn so that the sauce inside the jar supplies the color: the white linework and the red or green of the contents complete each other, making the product itself part of the picture. A colored hot-stamped label on the cap adds a final accent.

The design took the 2023 Pentawards Diamond, the competition's Best of Show picked from all category winners out of more than 2,000 entries from over 70 countries. Auge Design was additionally named Pentawards Design Agency of the Year.

The idea uses the product's own color as a design element instead of hiding it behind a label.

It expresses brand heritage through a concrete visual mechanic, not a slogan.

Screen printing on glass is inexpensive to produce yet reads as bespoke and premium.

The jury of the world's leading packaging competition singled it out as Best of Show.

The Diamond win made Casa Marrazzo 1934 a reference case for transparent packaging design and contributed to Auge Design being named Pentawards Design Agency of the Year 2023; the agency has continued to win top packaging awards in later editions.
