Meituan's 'i-people buy iPhones' films lift Apple sales 572% on the app

SG argued an introvert's 'i' belongs with iPhone's 'i': seven absurd shorts told i-people to buy Apple products on Meituan — 130M+ exposures in three days.

Meituan Waimai (美团外卖)

The ideaFuse MBTI's introvert 'i' with iPhone's 'i': 'i-people buy iPhones on Meituan' — no store, no small talk, 30 minutes.substantial

What it had to solve

Electronics were one of the fastest-growing categories in on-demand delivery, and Apple is the flagship brand that wins the category. Meituan already had 'delivers everything' awareness, so the task was to make buying Apple products there feel obvious, and to stand out from other electronics marketing.

How it works

By 2024, Meituan delivered far more than food, and consumer electronics were among the fastest-growing categories in on-demand retail. Apple was the trophy brand: win the right to deliver iPhones and the whole electronics aisle follows. Meituan's awareness was 'delivers everything', so the campaign needed to make Apple purchases feel native to the app.

S.G. Advertising found the bridge in the letter 'i'. iPhone, iPad and iPod all start with it — and so, in the MBTI personality system popular with young Chinese, do introverts ('i人'), who dislike shops and small talk. The claim wrote itself: 'i-people buy iPhones on Meituan Waimai' (i人买iPhone,就上美团外卖). The agency then expanded 'i' beyond introverts — idea-rich people, important people, interesting people — so the joke covered everyone, not just one personality type.

Seven short films played out the idea in wildly different styles — live action, animation, puppet theatre, web-interface comedy — tied together by a stiff AI voiceover that made the absurdity land. Each scene still sold the real benefit: Apple products delivered to your door in about thirty minutes, no store visit needed.

Within three days the films drew over 130 million exposures and 250,000+ interactions across Weibo, WeChat Channels, Douyin and Xiaohongshu. Meituan's business numbers moved with them: real transaction value for Apple products grew 572%, order volume 536%, and in-app searches 204%. The campaign won a Bronze at LongXi and a Gold in the sales-growth category at Jintong, where it was cited as creative social content that measurably converted.

Why it lands

  • The 'i' bridge made a category claim memorable: introvert + iPhone + delivery in one syllable.
  • An identity (MBTI introverts) gave the convenience story an emotional 'this is for me' hook.
  • Expanding 'i' to ideas, importance and interestingness let every consumer join the joke, not just introverts.
  • Varied production styles kept seven films from feeling repetitive while one slogan drilled the message.
  • The sales numbers tied the creative wordplay directly to business conversion.

What it did

In three days across Weibo, WeChat Channels, Douyin and Xiaohongshu the campaign drew 130M+ exposures and 250K+ interactions. What you can take

When a category needs a mental shortcut, borrow an identity people already use: one letter can fuse a personality type, a product line and a convenience promise into a repeatable slogan.

Since then

The campaign anchored S.G. Advertising's 2024 awards haul: the agency was named Jintong's Agency of the Year with 35 case awards, and Jintong cited the film specifically as creative social content that measurably moved sales. Meituan kept pushing on-demand electronics through iPhone launch cycles, and the 'i-people buy iPhone' wordplay (i人买iPhone) remained the reference point for turning a personality meme into a commerce message.
