LeEco Video's 'owes 12.2B yuan' icon wins the CNY red-packet war
While Chinese apps printed giveaway sums on their icons, delisted LeEco printed its real debt — and earned 410M topic reads and a ~20% download lift.
LeEco Video (乐视视频)
What it had to solve
Every Spring Festival, Chinese internet giants update their app icons to advertise red-packet giveaways — Pinduoduo 2.8 billion yuan, Baidu 2.2 billion, Douyin 2 billion. LeEco Video was in no position to join: it had been delisted from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in July 2020, its shares worth 0.18 yuan, and its 2020 third-quarter report showed net assets of about minus 15.3 billion yuan.
How it works
Before Chinese New Year 2021, internet giants decorated their app icons with the sums they would give away — Pinduoduo 2.8 billion yuan, Baidu 2.2 billion, Douyin 2 billion. LeEco Video, the once-hailed 'China's Netflix' that had been delisted from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in July 2020, had nothing to hand out, so it printed the opposite: an icon declaring it owed 12.2 billion yuan.
The change needed no media budget. Users screenshot the icon, joked that the company should rename itself 'optimistic', and pushed the topic onto Weibo's hot search, where it drew more than 410 million reads and 45,000 discussions. LeEco's follow-up statement — that it faced its difficulties with optimism — only fed the story, until the company clarified the campaign in an official notice: net assets were actually about minus 15.3 billion yuan, making the joke both self-deprecating and accurate.
LeEco Video reported downloads up by close to 20 per cent after the stunt, and its gesture was widely quoted as the most memorable Chinese New Year marketing of 2021. What made it work was that the joke was true: for a brand with a negative balance sheet, self-aware humour was the only 'giveaway' it could credibly afford.
Why it lands
- Every rival's icon claimed a giveaway, so LeEco's debt claim inverted the whole category and became instantly legible.
- The company never denied the number — it corrected the joke upward, which made the honesty part of the story.
- A hot-search topic turned a delisted streaming app into the most-discussed brand of the festival without paid media.
- The pun-friendly Chinese phrasing let users remix the joke, extending its life across memes and comments.
What it did
The icon hit Weibo's hot search instantly; by the company's clarification the topic had drawn more than 410 million reads and 45,000 discussions. Fans joked LeEco should rename itself 'optimistic' (乐观), and LeEco Video reported app downloads rose by close to 20 per cent. A delisted streamer with no giveaway budget became the most talked-about brand of the festival.
What you can take
When everyone is bragging, honesty is the loudest voice: a joke that tells the truth earns goodwill that borrowed glamour cannot, because the news cannot contradict it.
Since then
LeEco's official notice confirmed the icon was a deliberate Spring Festival promotion and that the underlying figure was even worse than the joke, with net assets of about minus 15.3 billion yuan. The company kept operating its streaming service and TVs, but the stunt did not change its finances — 2020's first three quarters still showed revenue of 222 million yuan and a 932 million yuan loss. It remains one of the most cited examples in China of turning bad news into brand voice rather than hiding it.
