KPlus 'Friendshit': the banking app that gives a shy teen something to say — ADFEST Grande

Kasikornbank's deadpan short turns the K Plus app into a conversation starter — 1M views in 3 hours, ADFEST 2019 Grande Lotus.

Kasikornbank (KBank)

The ideaTurn a banking app into the one topic everyone shares: a deadpan film where the shyest girl wins over her new school by talking about K Plus.substantial

What it had to solve

K Plus is Kasikornbank's free mobile banking app. In Thailand's reserved culture, making friends in an unfamiliar place is genuinely awkward — and teens, the app's core audience, feel it hardest. The agency wanted teens to see the app not as a utility but as part of their social lives.

How it works

K Plus is Kasikornbank's free mobile banking app in Thailand, competing for the attention of a generation that switches apps constantly. Instead of selling speed or features, GREYnJ United told a deadpan story about the country's shyness: Hui, leaving her hometown to study in Bangkok, is terrified of making new friends, and her only friend Kluay coaches her through every awkward attempt to break the ice.

In the 5.5-minute comedy, every suggestion fails until Kluay tells Hui to talk about something 'general, relevant, everybody knows, everybody uses, simple and mainstream' — K Plus. The app becomes the conversation starter that finally works, letting product benefits surface through the joke rather than through a sales message. The film was written and directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit of Hub Ho Hin, with GREYnJ copywriter Chanikarn Sitthiaree in the cast.

The film entered the Thai zeitgeist: ADFEST 2019's Grand Jury President Mark Tutssel said it reached one million views in three hours, lifted app downloads by 28% within a day, and left K Plus processing 20 million transactions every 24 hours — 'the most activated app in Thailand'. It won two Gold Lions and a Silver at Cannes 2018, the Spikes Asia Grand Prix, plus D&AD, Clio and Ad Stars honours, and the Grande Lotus at ADFEST 2019.

Why it lands

  • Shyness about talking to strangers is a real Thai social truth, so the comedy felt universal rather than manufactured.
  • Banking features were dramatised as the ice-breaker teens already share, making a utility part of friendship itself.
  • Deadpan film humour and a star cast made the brand worth watching, so distribution ran on social sharing.
  • The idea scaled across formats and years — follow-up films 'Face/Off' and 'Renaissance Man' kept the same storytelling voice.

What it did

At ADFEST 2019 the Grand Jury president cited one million views in three hours and a 28% jump in app downloads within a day, with K Plus processing 20 million transactions every 24 hours. The film had already won Cannes Lions Golds (Entertainment, Online Fiction; Film, Consumer Services), a Film Craft Silver, plus D&AD, Ad Stars and Clio honours and the Spikes Asia Grand Prix, per the director's portfolio.

What you can take

To make a utility matter, dramatise the human moment it already solves — awkward small talk — instead of listing features; the product becomes the hero because it is everyone's common ground.

Since then

The film anchored a run of KBank comedies from GREYnJ United: the surreal follow-up 'Face/Off' appeared later in 2018, and 'Renaissance Man' followed in 2019 as what the agency called its third consecutive campaign for the bank. Alongside Cannes Lions Golds, the Spikes Asia Grand Prix, and Clio, D&AD and Ad Stars honours, 'Friendshit' took the Grande Lotus at ADFEST 2019, where jury president Mark Tutssel credited it with one million views in three hours and a 28% jump in app downloads within a day.
