Central's 'Shop Unfriend' makes besties rivals over a sale item — ADFEST Film Lotus Grande

Central relaunched its Midnight Sale with a film where best friends wreck each other over one bargain — ADFEST 2021 Grande and Spikes Asia Grand Prix.

Central Department Store

The ideaRebrand Central's annual Midnight Sale as 'Black Midnight Sale: Shop Unfriend' and dramatise the in-store thrill of grabbing a bargain as a war between two best friends.substantial

What it had to solve

Central Midnight Sale is Central Department Store's biggest sales event, held during Black Friday 2020, but a discount alone would drown in global sale noise from 11.11 and Black Friday. It was also the brand's first campaign after Thailand's initial COVID-19 wave, when the country was saturated with gloomy pandemic news and people longed for normal life — and for the in-store thrill of beating another shopper to the last item, which online shopping could not offer.

How it works

Central Midnight Sale is the biggest sales event of Central Department Store, and in late 2020 it collided with the world's loudest shopping moments: 11.11, Black Friday and a competitor's flagship sale. Central's first campaign after Thailand's first COVID-19 wave had to make a decades-old discount event feel urgent again — while the whole country was still anxious and hungry for entertainment.

Wolf BKK's answer was to change the name and the frame: 'Black Midnight Sale: Shop Unfriend'. A 1:45 dark-comedy film, launched November 19, 2020, sends two best friends to the sale as rivals; from the first frame the competition escalates until they are sabotaging each other by any means to grab the same item, because at a real midnight sale it is 'my sale, not yours'. The story turned the one thing online shopping cannot give — racing another human to the last discounted item — into the hero.

Juries agreed the idea had legs: the film won the Film Lotus Grande at ADFEST 2021, then the Grand Prix in Film at Spikes Asia 2021 with an extra Gold and Bronze, plus a Gerety Bronze; it was Wolf BKK's first Grande and Central's first as well. The Midnight Sale franchise that the film relaunched is still Central's flagship event years later, run as a 35-year-old omnichannel campaign by 2023.

Why it lands

  • It sold the emotion the channel owned: instead of copying Black Friday price messaging, the film dramatised the in-store fight for a last item that online sales can never replicate.
  • The renamed event created a franchise the retailer could own — 'Shop Unfriend' made the midnight sale a cultural idea, not a calendar date, and survived as the sale's identity.
  • In a gloomy pandemic year the comedy was deliberate relief: Wolf set two friends against each other and let Thailand laugh, which made a retail ad feel like entertainment.
  • The idea ran across categories and formats — film, online video, entertainment — so juries at ADFEST, Spikes Asia and Gerety all recognised it without the campaign being rewritten for each show.

What it did

The film won the Film Lotus Grande at ADFEST 2021 — the first Grande for both Wolf BKK and its client — and at Spikes Asia 2021 it took the Grand Prix in Film (Travel, Leisure, Retail, Restaurants & Fast Food Chains) plus a Gold in the same category and a Bronze in Entertainment. It also helped Hakuhodo win Network of the Year at ADFEST 2021 and picked up a Bronze at the Gerety Awards, establishing Wolf BKK as a Thai boutique to watch.

What you can take

When the product is a discount, the differentiator has to be the feeling the discount promises — Central sold the chaotic joy of beating another shopper, not the price cut.

Since then

Shop Unfriend anchored a run of award-winning Central work: at Spikes Asia 2021 Wolf BKK's earlier Central film 'Don't Die Till That Day' also won a Silver, and Hakuhodo was named ADFEST 2021 Network of the Year with Shop Unfriend a key contributor. Central kept relaunching Midnight Sale each season, evolving it into an omnichannel event across stores, app and social; by April 2023 Central called the sale a 35-year-old signature campaign and projected double-digit growth for the latest edition — the entertainment-led relaunch had renewed the property, not just its film.
