Jiangxiaobai Expression Bottle: UGC Liquor Bottle, 80% of 2017 Sales
Scan QR code, write moods, upload photos, generate and share bottle on WeChat Moments—bottle becomes UGC medium.
Jiangxiaobai (江小白)
What it had to solve
Jiangxiaobai positions itself as a light-flavored small-bottle baijiu under the 'Youth Small Wine' (青春小酒) label; previously it captured first place in the niche market with the Quote Bottle (语录瓶), which printed one line of copy on the bottle; the founder wanted to upgrade from 'the brand speaks to users' to 'users express themselves,' making the product inherently social and shareable.
How it works
In 2012, Jiangxiaobai entered the baijiu market with the Quote Bottle: each bottle was fitted with a paper sleeve printed with a line of copy that struck young people, such as 'I drank everyone under the table just to whisper something to you,' and thereby established a foothold in the Youth Small Wine category. Founder Tao Shiquan judged that people drink to express emotions, so expression itself is the product.
In Q2 2016, Jiangxiaobai upgraded the Quote Bottle into the Expression Bottle: a QR code was added to the bottle; scanning it entered an H5 page; users could write what they most wanted to say at that moment, choose a background, upload photos, generate a bottle exclusively theirs, and share it on WeChat Moments. The company no longer worked out all copy itself; instead it selected interesting lines from massive user quotes for mass production — Tao Shiquan called this 'crowdfunding of creativity' — while using scan data to feed back into product and channel judgments.
The results exceeded expectations: in the third quarter of the launch year, revenue grew 86% year on year, search index and e-commerce 2C sales grew by more than 100%, and sales ranked among the top during the 2016 Tmall Liquor Festival; by 2017 it became the flagship product, contributing more than 80% of sales, and user participation reached the million scale. The industry later summarized this case as 'Product as Media': the bottle is no longer just packaging, but a carrier through which consumers express attitudes and show off on WeChat Moments.
Why it lands
- Changing one-way brand copy into two-way user expression gives the product social currency built in, making everyone willing to show it off.
- QR-code customization makes each consumer simultaneously a content producer and disseminator, while the company only curates.
- Quote crowdfunding also accumulates user and consumption-scene data, feeding back into product and channel decisions.
- Without increasing advertising budget, traffic is obtained through the product itself, rewriting the marketing cost structure.
What it did
In the third quarter of the launch year, revenue grew 86% year on year; search index and e-commerce 2C sales grew by more than 100%; sales ranked among the top during the 2016 Tmall Liquor Festival (天猫酒水节); in 2017 the Expression Bottle became the flagship product, contributing more than 80% of sales, and user UGC participation reached the million scale.
What you can take
When product is content carrier, marketing budget is replaced by user participation: giving expression rights yields creativity, data, and dissemination—'Product as Media'.
Since then
After success, Jiangxiaobai continued user co-creation. In 2017, Tao Shiquan said even with no ad spend, growth could be 80%. The Expression Bottle stayed flagship, contributing over 80% of sales. Young artists held exhibitions on bottles. Tao noted the industry then valued small-bottle liquor; this case became a cited example in baijiu and marketing.
