Billy Boy's CAMDOM app locks every phone in the room — the first digital condom
Condom brand Billy Boy turns protection digital: a Bluetooth app that blocks phones' cameras and mics — 700K+ downloads, Epica 2025 Digital Grand Prix.

What it had to solve
Billy Boy, Germany's leading condom brand, had gone quiet for a generation — young people saw condoms as something from the past, while smartphones, 'an extension of their bodies,' made recording someone during sex without consent dangerously easy. The brand wanted to be relevant to Gen Z again.
How it works
Billy Boy, Germany's biggest condom brand, had watched its category fall out of conversation: for Gen Z, condoms felt like something from the past, while smartphones — 'an extension of their bodies' — had made recording someone during sex without consent dangerously easy. INNOCEAN Berlin read both as one brief: protection that fits the digital generation.
The answer was CAMDOM, the first 'digital condom' — an app that works like the analogue original: partners place their phones together, swipe down a virtual button, and Bluetooth locks the cameras and microphones on every paired device, Android or iOS. If anyone tries to break the connection, an alarm signals a potential non-consensual recording.
Building it took a year and a half, with engineers across three continents, because blocking both platforms' hardware without Wi-Fi was unprecedented, and Apple scrutinized every claim in an app touching intimacy. At launch, Billy Boy and INNOCEAN recruited influencers; revenge-porn survivors joined for free because they believed in it, and mainstream media picked up the story.
By the time it won awards, CAMDOM had been downloaded more than 700,000 times — 40% of them in India, where the taboo around sex made the app a subtle way in — and had become an icebreaker for parents talking to their teenagers. It took a Bronze at Cannes 2025 and the Digital Grand Prix at the 2025 Epica Awards.
Why it lands
- The idea extends the brand's literal product logic: the same promise as a condom, redesigned for the threat of the smartphone era.
- It solves a real, documented harm — non-consensual recording and leaks — instead of just making noise for the brand.
- The app itself created the media story: a technical first (blocking cameras on both operating systems via Bluetooth) that journalists and parents could talk about.
- It reframed the brand from 'old-fashioned protection' to protector of digital lives, making Billy Boy relevant to a generation that had written it off.
What it did
700,000+ downloads, 40% of them in India; mainstream media coverage that used the app to open a taboo conversation; a Cannes 2025 Bronze in Brand Experience & Activation; and the Epica 2025 Digital Grand Prix for 'Camdom: The First Digital Condom.'
What you can take
Extend the brand's core promise to a new threat instead of selling harder: Billy Boy built the digital equivalent of its product — software that solves the modern version of the same problem.
Since then
CAMDOM went on to win the Epica 2025 Digital Grand Prix and a Cannes Lions 2025 Bronze in Brand Experience & Activation, and it kept spreading through family-oriented podcasts and YouTube channels. Downloads passed 700,000 — 40% of them in India, a market the team had not targeted. Billy Boy continued to frame safe sex as a digital as well as analogue duty, positioning CAMDOM as an icebreaker for conversations about consent between couples and between parents and teenagers.
